I told you I'd do an tutorial, I told you!okay, just wanted to say, this is not "right" or "wrong" or something, I saw many books which explained it a bit diffrent, but I think it depends on the style. this is my style, I use 7 heads.
and my shoulders are not so wide and the hips are wider, but k.

how big is a 'head' meant to be? I have found many tutorials with this method but I don't know how big to create them.Β

well whichever size you are working on! you can also do the same system backwards, if you want to fit a whole body into one space, measure a certain lenght and then cut it into the desired fractions! like by 6 or 7 and then one fraction will be the size of your head. does this help

I guess it depends how big you want your guy to be... the bigger the head, the bigger the body (just a guess)

I've been looking up tutorials, and I've been wondering, is the "seven head" thing mandatory? I ask because I was checking if people do this when they're drawing for comics.

well it helps a lot, I think
as said, I don't really draw this everytime, but e.g. I will know how long I have to draw the arm, so I don't draw tiny tyrannosaur-arms or something xD

well it's my style, so I use "7 heads", but there are actually people using 8 or even 6
yeah, it's not excactly "mandatory", it's like when you rasterize a head to know where to place the nose etc.
if you have problems with the height (e.g. drawing way too big heads, tyrannosaur arms, too short or too long legs) it's quite useful, I know, when I started I didn't read any tutorials, so I didn't really improved. but after learning the properties of a body and having those always in mind, the drawings will be correct.

...and this tutorial is probably going to be a bit realistic rather than cartoonish, but it is easy to change it as long as you get the general idea/proportions right or similar
