Description Oils on canvas
18 x 12"
1999

There are several versions of Hasui's "Evening Snow, Edo River", 1932
A blue, a purple and a green. I wanted this woodblock so much but couldn't afford it.
So, I took the best of what I liked in the various versions and made an oil painting of it.

Dear Masa Sasaki,

I include your last name as I didn't notice it before.

Second hometown? Your last name is Japanese? Wonder if you were born in Japan.

Glad you like my painting. Kawasi Hasui is one of my favorite artists.

Dear Robert,

Thank you very much for another nice reply. Yes, I am Japanese and I was born and raised in Japan. I am originally from Nagasaki. I had lived in Kyoto for 20 years since I was 18 years old (to enter university and I worked in Kyoto after I graduated from univ). It's been 3 years since I immigrated to Canada. That's why my English is so bad!!

Oh, do you like Kawasi Hasui (actually, the correct spell of his family name is Kawase, I think)? I should be ashamed, but I don't know much about him (Of course I've heard of his name, though). I'll check his works later! By the way, my favorite woodblock-print artist is Hiroshige Ando. (very ordinary, hahaha)

I am truly impressed by your paintings and your site in Deviant Art. I've become a big fan of yours, Robert. You are amazing!!

Dear Masa,

Yes, you should look Hasui up. In Japan he was named a National Treasure in 1957. I shall look at your favorite woodblock-print artist Hiroshige Ando.

Thank you for being a fan of mine.

Your English is excellent.

No. I wish I could have. I didn't know of Hasui when I was in Japan on the way to Vietnam and had no time to look around.
