Description
So I have AP tests this week and I don't feel like studying so I decided to sketch out Mirembe, Untuai, and Opeyemi on a height chart so I can keep their relative sizes consistent.Sorry most of my uploads are sketches, by the way. I'm wayyyyyy to distracted right now to go through the trouble of cleaning anything up.

Nice! The black lady on the left is so beautiful and the man looks sexy! Not sure what to say about the 3rd one, but she's fine and pretty in her own way.

I know you might not use this account as often anymore, but I like your character designs for Mirembe and Untuai. Finding a black character might not be difficult, but I can count the number of very dark-skinned blacks I've seen in established fiction on one hand.

By the way, is it still a loincloth even if it's a one-piece outfit?

Why's Mirembe wearing a more modest outfit? Is she older in this picture?

No, I didn't like how broken-up the green looked against her skin. And the top itself was inspired by Dinka warrior corsets, which cover up the belly completely.

Aww, I miss her old outfit that showed her belly. It looked much nicer.

I don't really know. That's not the most important aspect of her character.

But it's liberating. And proves that sexy ladies CAN be badass.

Eh, I'm not one to buy into the whole half naked = immediately liberated thing. I think women can be badass and sexy fully clothed, because most of the time the sexiness is just fanservice to male audiences. Plus, there's a lot of half-naked sexy badass heroines already.

I think Mirembe looks fine with her midriff covered. It's true that African people would need less covering in a tropical environment, which is why most of my own African characters tend to show quite a bit of skin, but not every female character's outfit need be men's fanservice.

Thank you! I left some obvious gaps in the cloth that would be cool enough for her, but I figured being a hunter in the jungle would require a bit of coverage for the soft bits, specifically for a woman of Mirembe's size.
Really, I have nothing against heroines in revealing outfits (especially if it's cultural), but with the setting of the story I didn't think a covered midriff was that big of a deal. o.O

Judging from my experience with comics, nearly all of the heroines are in pretty revealing outfits, including the black ones.

Yeah, but ever since Muslims made African natives wear less revealing clothes it's been BORING over there. If we all got to wear revealing clothing in our young age we'd be happier.

Except for those of us who are susceptible to sunburn or live in cold climates.
I don't have a problem with African characters wearing revealing clothing per se, as it's appropriate for the African climate, but you seem to want Mirembe to wear less purely to enhance her sex appeal. I like sexy women as much as any other straight guy, but women shouldn't be treated as sex objects all the time.

Not just women, but men too. Any body can be beautiful.
If we weren't so uptight about nudity all the time we wouldn't be so miserable.

BrandonScottPilcher In reply to YesImDeadpool [2012-05-22 01:06:15 +0000 UTC]
OK, I understand, but there is a good reason some people wear more clothing. Yes, nudity isn't inherently shameful, but if you live in a cold environment or have fair skin that's vulnerable to sunburn, covering yourself up makes sense.

YesImDeadpool In reply to BrandonScottPilcher [2012-05-22 01:09:31 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it won't be as likely for people of colder climates. A bit below that area, but not in the Arctic or in Eskimo territory.

A lot of African cultures didn't wear very revealing clothing, though. Even for those that did, their warriors and hunters covered up their torsos to protect their vital parts.

BrandonScottPilcher In reply to haodan [2012-05-22 01:03:55 +0000 UTC]
It's true that there were Africans who wore more clothing, but I have seen images of Africans who fought shirtless. Ancient Egyptians soldiers wore no shirts ([link] ), and neither did Zulus ([link] ). Of course, in both cases they carried shields for protection.
π: 0 β©: 1
haodan In reply to BrandonScottPilcher [2012-05-22 01:13:28 +0000 UTC]
That's exactly right. But I figured since Mirembe's tribe is located in a jungle, carrying a shield would be too much of a burden in tight spaces or while traveling through the canopy. It was my assumption that just wearing protective clothing would be the best option for them. As for Opeyemi's people, they are more like the cultures you mentioned.

So Opeyemi and her people live in a more open environment with less tangled vegetation?

haodan In reply to BrandonScottPilcher [2012-05-22 01:33:47 +0000 UTC]
Yep, it's an open river valley. The actual mega-tribe is built into the valley walls, like in this pic: [link]
They usually fish for their meat or grow vegetation in man-made rice patty-like areas.

Meh, Mirembe's tribe tribe is pretty safe when it comes to that particular issue. They're a very honor-valuing people, and deeply revere their matriarchal roots.

The top and skirt are sewn together, so it's the "corset" part that's covering her stomach, not her loincloth.
