Description

Adventure Time continues to soar into new heights with Season 8, a season that continues the work of its predecessor that makes the series one of the best of the decade.

The events of the seventh season finale have started a snowball that becomes bigger and bigger until it reached its end in the ninth and final season. Due to this fact, the eighth season is mostly concerned with advancing and finishing storylines, with 5 of the 28 episodes of the season being true standalone episodes. Almost all of this season’s episodes are related to storylines, and it made Season 8 showcased some of the best storytelling that we’ve seen from this series.

There are three major stories in this season. The first story is about the emergence of Fern a.k.a. Grass Finn. An entity born from the fusion of both the Finn Sword and the Grass Blade, that happened in the Season 7 finale. Being Finn’s doppelganger, the season focuses on how he adjusts to his new life filled with turbulent circumstances, while also exploring the relationship between the two Finns.

The second story is about the whereabouts of the humans, something that was briefly mentioned in the previous season. This story is fully explored in one of the two miniseries of the season called Islands. This miniseries not only answers the question of the humans’ situation, but it also tells the origin of Susan Strong and the heartbreaking love story of Finn’s parents: Martin Mertens and Minerva Campbell.

The story about the Elementals came to a head with the third and final miniseries entitled Elements. While it isn’t as strong as the other two miniseries, it did a great job of exploring the land of Ooo after Finn and Jake left, and it also furthered the story between Ice King and Magic Betty. It also did something pretty incredible by making Lumpy Space Princess an enjoyable and important character,  with the miniseries giving context to her personality and role to the lore of the series.

Season 8 is the show’s victory lap towards its finale. While it lacks the variety of episodes that the seventh season has, it makes up for it by delivering some of the tightest and continuous storytelling we have seen in the show. With the events of this season guarantee to be affecting the outcome of the future, the final season of Adventure Time was set up to be a glorious final bow.
