STORY TIME!
The Apple family were preparing for war.

Most of them, as well as a few other Earth ponies, had gathered together unscathed. Granny Smith and Apple Bloom had gone with a small group of other Earth ponies, hoping to find refuge in other lands for as long as the fighting continued. They'd left soon after Apple Acres had been torn apart by the chaotic weather and the remaining ponies had not heard from them but hoped not to; if all was quiet then maybe the escape had gone well.

The Apple camp had managed to get some metal to go with their leather (the cow herds had not well survived the pegasus ponies' attacks). A few of the fighters among them were chosen for spiked hoof covers to match their helmets, the plan being simple; the Apple family specialised in dealing well-aimed kicks to trees, an attack that they could use on different targets should it come to it.

For long hours the ponies practised; direct kicks and ones intending to use the spikes, kicks aiming for legs, midriff, neck and head... Although the metal horseshoes were difficult to get used to the ponies soon showed improvement. Before long Applejack could kick a dummy off its legs and one kick from her brother, Big Mac, would see the dummy explode into sawdust.

The Apple family were ready.

So yeah, looks like I'm using this ATG thing to do my little warring "mane 6" ponies...

Simple armour for the Apple Soldiers, mostly leather apart from the helmet and horse shoes.

Mane cut short because too long and it's a major disadvantage as a handle attached to one's head. Less so with the tail as the main attack is hind legs (plus hair's pretty hefty).
