They had been walking all day, Evonna could tell, from the ache in her paws and the brilliant colors in the sky as the sun sank below the horizon, inviting the first stars to peek tentatively over the land. The trail beneath her feet was winding, going ever up into the heavens. Ahead of her, Fawn did not slow until the land grew even once more, and here, it seemed, was their destination. Evonna cast a wary eye at the drop just beside her. Her mother had led her to the very top of one of the peaks of the Great Maw, where all Alphas lived, and her nerves were getting the better of her. Tail between her legs, Evonna began to edge back towards the safety of the mountain path they had just trekked. Without warning, Fawn suddenly leapt at her daughter, and with a mighty squeak, Evonna dodged quickly out of the way. When she cast the elder Alpha a bewildered glance, Fawn gave her a grin, before leaping again. Again, Evonna dodged, beginning to forget about the impending fall. Her mother waited a moment, continuing to pounce and bat at the pup, rolling her onto her back playfully when she could not dodge. It was only once Evonna shuffled dangerously close to the edge, that Fawn gently gripped her by the scruff, and hauled her back to safety. The sudden movement, coupled with the realization of how close she’d been to falling, set Evonna’s heart pounding, and her legs began to quiver as she once more tucked her tail, her wide eyes peering over the drop again. Her mother’s voice, gentle and soothing, reached her then. “Daughter, you must always be aware of your surroundings, whether you are fighting, or hunting; on the ground, or in the sky; you never know what danger may be lurking, clear or not, and you never know when it may strike.” Evonna listened to all of this, and finally dared to peel her eyes from the valley below, her frightened gaze meeting her mother’s calm one; she realized, the other would not have ever let her fall. Her heart calming, spine straightening, Evonna slowly steeled herself, and stood proud once more. “Yes, mother.” She managed, though her voice still exhibited its squeaky quality from before. “Come now,” her mother continued, dropping into a crouch. “Try to dodge my blows, while also keeping an eye on what is around you.” When Evonna hesitated, her mother offered her a gentle smile once more, and added, “I promise, I will not allow you to fall.” With the final reassurance, Evonna nodded, and dodged easily the next time, her muscles tense and waiting for her mother’s pounce, though she made it a point to leap to her side, rather than straight back. They continued like this for some time, Evonna dodging or being rolled over by a heavy paw, her mother occasionally correcting her form or attention, but always she leapt to the side, or back towards the path, never in a direction in which she was unsure what lay waiting.
