Description
As the roving tour mechanic for the Ohio Lung Association Tour, my job was to keep the participants up and riding. As I always carry a camera, I could stop to document the ride for the riders as well as the sponsors. In this image, taken in the early 1980s, the line of cyclists rode along the right shoulder of mainly country highway roads. Back then helmets were recommended but not universally worn.
While many viewers think the riders are correctly positioned on the road, in fact they are placing themselves in more danger, not less, by riding so close to the road's edge.
Being that close to the edge allows cars to pass them without leaving their lane. What they should be doing is riding between two to four feet from the edge, up to the center of the lane, and by wearing a mirror, they can communicate by hand signals with the cars coming up behind them. By positioning themselves farther from the edge, they make the cars pass by moving them out of their lane, and not forcing the riders into any road hazards possible on the edge of the road.
Taken with my pocket Zeiss Contessa with a 45mm F2.8 Opton lens on Kodak Plus X panchromatic 135mm film.

trails and sidewalks are more dangerous, as the less experienced riders prefer them. eventually with help from others, the rules of the road are learned.

Great photo. Again these photos work so well in black and white. Love the look. I notice some bikers have the triangles on their backs for safety. No helmets, but triangles. Times change.
If you ever road a bike where I live you'd ride on a sidewalk or you'd be taking your life in your hands.

A great day to you sir.
