The speed of his partner was always something Flower admired, being such a heavy stag already by being a Blackwood and then from heaving a thing for food, it was a talent simply not available for him. But even though he thought of Ace's quick movements with adoration, now he cursed it silently. He couldn't keep up with his partner and soon he was following only his scent or the rare occasion that he saw a silver shine in the bushes he had learned to pay attention to whenever Ace was in a playful mood or hiding to prank him. But nothing like this was happening now, no chase for the fun of it, no hiding for a surprise nose boop or something, only Flower's heart and hoofs beating like drums from the sudden running and the fear of losing his mate. He cursed himself for how stupid he had been, how foolish his thoughts had been. He saw all the happy families growing, the fawns being born and Ace loving them all, and he saw Ace's face when he had brought them all back to their parents after playing. The longing and sadness for something what they couldn't have. Flower was so focused on these thoughts that he lost sight of what they had. Each other. And now he gave everything to chase after this.

It took a little while to find Ace again. Flower had lost sight of him and could only follow the scent, but he had an idea where he might find his partner. They had hiding spots here and there, for when they wanted to be alone and have a little privacy from the herd. Well hidden places and one was close by. And soon he spotted Ace again, he was heavily breathing from the run, he certainly wasn't the type for more than sprints to get away from predators that were too much to fight off, long runs as much as he'd love to do those with Ace, he couldn't keep up with him for long. But now Ace was lying on the ground under some bushes, curled into the smallest ball he could and Flower was sure he heard sobbing, even though Ace might have tried to make no sound. The Blackwood slowly got closer once his breathing was a little more under control. The smaller stag didn't look at Flower, but he also didn't try to get away anymore. Maybe now was the chance to explain...
