When the Unity Crystals were first created, one thing was for certain: someone needed to protect them. Ponies from all over Equestria were desperate to get their magic back but none of them were willing to reunite with the other pony races, so until they were the Unity Crystals were to be protected.

Luster Dawn, the Princess's student, took the Unicorn Crystal deep into the Everfree Forest into the cave the Tree of Harmony once was and hid it there. As generations passed, she began teaching other unicorns of her own to protect the crystal as well- eventually moving locations from the Everfree Forest to what would eventually become Bridlewood in order to avoid the rapidly growing vines and dark magic the forest held.

Cheesecake "Lil Cheese" Pie was the pony that took on the Earth Crystal with them on their escape from Ponyville, which was being ravaged by the racism between ponies. Bringing their friends and family alongside them to start a new, small village along the coast: Maretime Bay.

Cozy Glow was trusted with the Pegasus Crystal, which she was terrified of. Having been a reformed villain she was far from sure that she could protect it- so with the help of some of the friends she'd made over time she found a mountain to isolate herself on. It didn't last long however, as many Pegasi followed her in an attempt to get away from the other two pony races and ended up forming what would eventually become Zephyr Heights.
