Description I think that mindset is complete and utter bullshit. In the end, who's not going to Hell?

You're supposed to be nice and kind, like they told you to be, right? Not spiteful little bitches that say everyone is going to hell for not thinking like you. Hell doesn't even exist and if it does, then I'd rather hang out with Lucifer than god.

What else should I add to this, guys?

EDIT: People who can't read: nowhere did I state this came from the Bible and nowhere did I state that all religious people think this way. You silly, illiterate people. c:

im disappointed! If soooo many of us are going to hell, you'd think that the ones who aren't would be trying just a little bit harder to save us all!
But no, its the same scare-tactics after all these years!!
They should try love and understanding instead, that would probably persuade more people to change

You remind me of a classmate of mine in my senior year. I forgot how it started, but the rest of it went like this:

Chris: You go to hell, you go to hell and you die.
Me: You first.
Chris: No, not me, I'm the bus driver.

I think that was one of the many good times in my last year of school.

I'm all good, I'm gonna go get abducted by aliens, quickly escape by killing a few, live on a small market planet and sell goods for a living while taking photo's of the many alien species. steal a ship, fly back to earth and go on with my daily life without telling anyone of my experience for a few years, then show the world the evidence, create a world war, survive and be the last human on earth.

Heaven will be boring and Hell would be crowded and have to much parties

I agree that this mindset is a load of crap. It's people with this mindset who make us Christians look bad and they are sending the wrong message. As a Christian, my job is to love everyone unconditionally as God does, do I always do it? No, but this is because I'm not perfect just as everyone isn't perfect. Not trying to preach, just sharing is all.

Old Testament laws were somewhat eradicated by the coming of Jesus in the New Testament...

I can't speak to a lot of what the Old Testament said, but I believe in this case this was a manner of family honor. Back then, if a woman were caught as pregnant and unwed, she could be stoned to death for her infidelity. Of course, if she were raped, it wouldn't be her fault, but who was going to tell the community that?

The man who raped a woman back then would have to "own up" for his crime, as it were. If he were to rape her and run, she would likely get pregnant and be considered damaged property, never to marry or be taken care of. But to make him marry her was to ensure that she and her child would be taken care of, and the family honor would be withheld.

It's a twisted way of thinking, I know, but this is how they made sure women were taken care of back then. We aren't quite so open and forgiving towards rapists now (with good reason!) but they were all about family honor back then.

I personally believe that the Old Testament is written so extensitively (like in the case of blood, uncleanliness, the way to eat meat, how to treat women, etc) because people were so inclined to sin and had less of a sense of right and wrong. The laws were to ensure God's chosen people would actually make it past pestilence, disease, famine, and acts of crime in order to make it to where they are today. They needed more rules back then because they just didn't know how to survive without some sort of guidebook - times were much harder. They lived in the desert, there were wars aplenty, and they most certainly didn't have modern conveniences like we do now.

Hope this makes sense!! I'm no authority or anything - just trying to get a grasp of things like everyone else.

Without the concepts of heaven or hell, would we really push so hard to divide the line between right and wrong? Would "right" and "wrong" even exist? Because if we didn't give any thought at all to the afterlife...if we didn't care about heaven or fear hell, what would it matter if we become volunteers at the soup kitchen or serial rapists? Who cares if we become daycare workers or murderers?

Wouldn't everything just be the same if the concept of "sin" were not there?

Just a thought.

esalaka In reply to Mazdi [2012-03-28 17:14:21 +0000 UTC]

You clearly do not seem to understand how morality works and how it is unrelated to religion.

---

The concept of afterlife is odd regardless. It would make no reason to have several worlds of physical substance, implying such an afterlife would take place in a world of spiritual substance - ie. it would not resemble life as we know it in any way whatsoever. Not to even bother with the main problemacies of a dualist view.

(You should read on Kant's theories. He asserted that moral laws should be followed only out of respect for them and no other reason; not as a means to gain something but as an end itself.)

In no way is religion required for the sustenance or existence of a human society of any sort. Indeed, there are very many who identify as non-religious atheists who are much more pleasant people than religious ones who would assumedly care about a concept of sin unlike the non-religious people. Often I find that religious people are the ones acting in more immoral ways than non-religious ones, and in a way, if you don't have a religion your sense of morality is "purer", seeing as it has not been affected by old doctrine of any sort collected, formatted and processed over centuries.

Ie. Without the concepts of heaven or hell the concepts of right and wrong would certainly still exist.

---

As an afterthought, more comment on the matter of "what would it matter if we become volunteers at the soup kitchen or serial rapists?"

Let's start this simply. Assume morality is tied to religious concepts and that these religious concepts do not exist.
Now, would you want to be raped?

The answer is obvious: You wouldn't. Why? Doesn't matter. The very fact that you don't want something to happen to yourself is a form of the concept of "evil" or, indeed, "wrong". On the other hand, if you do want something to be done to you, you would obviously see it as "good" or "right". If someone raped you you would under most circumstances feel wronged even if you lacked language and higher cognitive ability merely because of the definition of rape, which I presume I do not have to present.

---

Think about it.

Read on moral theories, Christian theology and cognitive psychology if you find my points more than moderately confusing.

And don't take this personally, it's mostly just opinion anyway. Feel free to counter any of my so-called arguments as you please.

Mazdi In reply to esalaka [2012-03-28 19:20:33 +0000 UTC]

Hmm...thank you for taking the time to comprise a thoughtful rebuttal! I, like you, don't hold all the answers. I'm just sounding it out like everyone else in a very human attempt to form some answers to life's biggest questions.

I am now doing a little more research into this, if for nothing more than to get my brain juices flowing!

While I agree with what you say, how morality exists outside of religion, I have a few things I struggle with. These are, of course, questions that probably can't be answered by any human; merely theorized. But these arguments beg the questions:

Where does our sense of morality come from? Are they pre-programmed into us or learned? But if they are learned, who was the original teacher? Without a desire for heaven or fear of hell (or whatever sort of beliefs someone has about the afterlife; I am merely referring to the consequences of out choices), why do we choose at all? Who designed the unwritten moral code that we all seem to either adhere to or ignore? At our very basic level, what IS conscience?

I found a very interesting paragraph during my research:

"A recent report in Psychology Today concluded: "The most significant predictor of a person's moral behavior may be religious commitment. People who consider themselves very religious were least likely to report deceiving their friends, having extramarital affairs, cheating on their expenses accounts, or even parking illegally." Based on this finding, what we believe about Creation has a decided effect on our moral thinking and our behavior. Without belief in a Creator, the only option that seems to be left is to adhere to moral standards we make up for ourselves. Unless we live in a dictatorial society, we are free to choose our own personal moral code. But where does that freedom come from? The view of many who do not adhere to Creation is that morality is a creation of humanity, designed to meet the need of stable societies. All kinds of life are in a process of deciding between life and death, choosing what to do with power and/or authority. This ultimately leads to a system of virtues and values. The question is: what happens when our choices conflict with each other? What if something I believe I need in order for my life to continue results in death for you? If we do not have an absolute standard of truth, chaos and conflict will result as we are all left to our own devices and desires." "

I have no answers for anything; it's just some things to think about!

Everybody knows that the higher the altitude, the colder it gets. At least in Hell we'll be toasty-warm. Lucifer has the best music, the best sense of humour and, most importantly, a totally awesome name. LUCIFER. LUCIFER. LUCIFERRRRR.

Loving your straightforwardness, FYI. It annoys me to no end when people either don't bother reading descriptions or only a few words that they decide mean something it really doesn't. I sort of wish there was a moment of afterlife, just so that people can have a moment of regret for all the hate and anger they pointlessly wasted in life.
