Nevermore set his pencil down on the desk, just beside the singular lamp that just barely illuminated the desk he had been sitting at for pretty much the whole day. It was cold outside, as it had been all month, and instead of braving the frozen air he had elected to spend his day at his desk, toiling away at his art as he had been for most of the Kinderaux season. Far and few in between were the times where he had dared to brave the frozen world outside his comfortable box. The grey nyulop looked down at the pages of the notebook he had been drawing in, crammed from corner to corner with doodles of all kinds. He flipped over the page to the next one, and once more, and again he did so only to be met with the stiff brown backing of the book. He stopped, staring at the back for several stunned seconds. Had he really burned through the entire book in just a couple of weeks?
He closed the notebook, and his indigo eyes danced across the desk until they traced across a oblong shape, a fresh new notebook he had gotten during one of his few, rare outings that month. He recalled that day clearly, it wasn't long after he had grown, and he had been enjoying the breadth of the abilities of his new body. He recalled having taken shelter from the biting cold outside in the warmest corner of the library he could find, more towards the center and less of the corner, really. He hadn't been sitting there long before his personal torture, a big draken named Benny, approached him with that same, sickeningly happy grin and a twinkle in his pitless black eyes. He had came up to Nevermore, loud as ever and...
And..
Nevermore stopped his mind before it spiraled too deep into that bitter void. Why was he so angry? Oh how Benny had slighted him. How DARE he.. greet him and give him a gift.
Oh the AUDACITY. Nevermore chastized himself, introspecting. Why did he hate Benny so much? Benny never seemed to be broken, never once did he even seem fazed, by Nevermore's constant horrible attitude towards him. Nevermore truly didn't know why he acted so rude and spiteful to Benny. He visually grimaced, and then his face hardened. What right did Benny have to give him a whole existential crisis over a stupid notebook? A throaty growl rolled out of his gritted teeth and a clawed fist slammed down on the table. This was why, this was exactly why. Benny was loud and careless, and he was so sure of his stupid self. The grey nyulop grabbed a hold of the new notebook, he may have been running out of room for his art, but he didn't need the sympathy pages from a gloating joker in a scarf.

He threw himself up and out of his chair, he was going to dump this book in the snow outside, but just as he yanked the door to his room open in a fit of rage, he stopped. The hallway's glow was overwhelming, and flooded his dark room in a wash of warm yellow light. A sound once blocked out by the wood of the door drifted through to his ears.
He heard the sound of laughing. Down the hall, he could hear a group of friends socializing, each taking turns telling stories and busting a gut, and he sat in his room, staring out at the empty wall across the way from his door, and he realized something.
The few friends he did have he either spurned or was ignored by. While the few people who even tolerated his prescience were enjoying each other's company, he had been locked away, bitter and cold during the season of loving and giving. He didn't even know where they were, but they had been living on fine without him for the month.

He was alone. At the end of everything, he was alone.
