The yellow goop *is* her bottom half. It's based on the inside stuff that actually makes an urchin an urchin.

I see, that's a pretty original design choice. Though I imagine it might be awkward for her having her innards exposed to the world. Can she retract into her "hair-shell"?

The headpiece is pretty much an extension of her head. It's attached to her scalp, so she can't do much with it.
