Do you have any suggestions for a best dslr cameras on a limited budget? I have taken photos with iphones, olympus, fluflim, and kodak (mainly point and shoot).

Any ideas for which non-DSLR to get (on a budget)?

I'm honestly not up to date about non-DSLRs but generally like Canon's cameras.
Try using www.dpreview.com to compare cameras and prices so you make a good choice. Just don't be too hasty about it

I miss old school camera's the ones with film. I ate this stuff up too bad all the camera's that can do this that are digital are out of my price range. lol can't even afford to get my film developed.

This was so helpful. I had heard of some of these terms before but back then I had a non-digital camera. Finding out what these different settings on my digital mean in relation to those terms is great. Thank you for this tutorial.

hey, thanks for explaining, I'm pretty new at photography, so when I read for the first time things like "DSLR/SLR" I had no idea what it meant, and felt ignorant
your tutorial got interesting information, very useful. so thanks, and congratz on DD

Incidentally, you can change the aperture size on some compact cameras. I had a Sony Powershot (basic digital camera, nothing amazing) before my DSLR and you could still change the aperture, albeit with a choice of only two values. But it's good to know what is hidden in the auto modes for those people that don't have the option (and you should read your camera manual to find out!)

I heard a story about a photographer who was at someone's house for dinner. He was showing some photos and got some feedback from the hostess: "Oh wow, amazing photos! You must have a great camera!"

When dinner was served and they had all eaten, he enthused, "Wow, that was delicious! You must have a fantastic oven!"

Grayda [2011-07-04 07:48:44 +0000 UTC]

Very nicely done! Some of my best photos were taken with a P&S. And newer ones come with those features buried even deeper than the "scene" settings (e.g. my Casio P&S can do manual ISO and shutter speed)

And while a good understanding of your P&S is crucial, so is knowledge of basic photography rules, such as the rule of thirds, colour theory and stuff. Sounds tricky, but some googling works.

Plus good post-processing. Some of my mediocre shots have become centrepieces because of some creative post-processing ;D

Again, nice job and thanks for sharing this with us
