Description
I finished the book Musashi today. It was the first book in a very, very long time that I couldn't put down. Other stories bored me, but this one gripped my attention like nothing else. It took me back to my childhood, when I would read books constantly. What's it about? It's about a samurai, Takezo, who survives a war with his friend, Matahachi. The book goes over the time since that war, and the journey Takezo takes to learn the Way of the Sword, and become a true samurai. To undergo that path, he becomes a new man and changes his name to Miyamoto Musashi. The book is just invigorating. I love the duality between the right and wrong choices, with Musashi being the disciplined learner and Matahachi being the impulsive pleasure-seeker. This leads to their rise and downfall respectively. The journey of the man and woman is also handled well. Musashi, the man, has a struggle between pursuing the Way of the Sword and becoming a better swordsman, or settling down and marrying the woman he loves, Otsu. Otsu, the woman, has to endure her love for Musashi over the years that it takes him to decide, and turn down any potential suitors that want to marry her and give her a better life (there are many.) Otsu's determination was amazing, and she's one of my favorite characters! She's a real inspiration, I think. So many years passed, and she still remained loyal to Musashi... man, it was heartwarming.
On to the picture itself. It's Musashi (on the left) and Jotaro (right,) his disciple. Another thing I loved in the book was that Musashi would take on a young boy as a disciple. Even though he was still learning himself, he ended up being an amazing teacher and father figure. So wholesome, bros... anyway, some elements might look familiar to you. Well, when you base a character off a historical figure, there are going to be others who do the same thing! Like the legend of Wukong. There's a lot of interpretations, like Goku, etc. And when you come across that inspiration, you go, hey, I've seen this before! How many guys wear this sort of boxing glove?! Oops, wait, wrong reference. But here are the similarities I noticed:
-Samurai hair. Samurais usually shave their head but Musashi had a carbuncle when he was younger. So he has a huge scar on his scalp, and he doesn't shave it.
-Travels with a boy that has a basket hat, who's also his disciple.
-Loves sake. Of course, in moderation.
-Thot slayer. Loves Otsu, and only Otsu. No other woman can entice him. Honestly the other ronin isn't so strong in that department...
-Tan and tall, kinda rough looking, carries two swords... Musashi wears a hakama, though.
Coincidence? I think NOT! This is the first painting I've done in a while, too. Felt good! 4 AM GANG GANG REPRESENT NO SLEEP TONITE!!!!
