Yeah so I'm trying to get more into backgrounds, again. I'm also trying to figure this out for the short fan comic I'm working on. I like where this is going but I know it needs more work. The comic is for my "Blue" themed fanart I've started. Just to have something to show I've posted the background practice. I'm still very new to this painting thing so without outlines I find it hard to seperate objects. Look closely and you may be able to tell who's featuring in this fan comic.

This piece is rather messy and I've tried to use shadow to seperate the hills but you can't see the seperation between them. I want to make the background without outlines too (Except for the tree). What could I do to make this piece more clear? Ideas on lighting and shading would be good too.
What do you suggest I could have done to make this better?

It clearly shows that you've spent a lot of time working on the background! I am not very good at backgrounds myself, so I don't know how much of a help I can be; but you could try to give background objects more detail (like shading even on the pieces of grass) and see how that effects the whole picture/background/your liking for the picture. Otherwise you could also play with effects that are being used to simulate how close objects appear to be - for example things very close to the camera, but not in focus of the image, to appear blurrier than the rest of the picture!

Thanks for the tip. I've always had this image in my mind of how I wanted my art to look like with the characters outlined and things they intereact with outline while the BG was painted. I don't know what it is that makes me so obssesed with it.
