Vs. the Egg Dragoon

Sonic, having come so close to restoring his shattered world, faces a familiar machine, but without the power of his cursed form. The Werehog turns out to not be needed in this case though, because the mechanical titan is very different from its last incarnation. Its speed parallels Sonic's, its attacks appear to have been adapted to this new speed, and it is deadlier than ever. To Eggman, this is no coincidence; for him, this is not an old moment in time reinvigorated, no, this is a new battle in a nearly new machine, an improvement on an old failure. While Dark Gaia's power may not have influenced the creation of this Egg Dragoon, it will still prove to be a dangerous machine for our blue hero to face...

Production Notes:
- Well that was certainly a challenge. The main reason I drew the Unleashed 360 Egg Dragoon piece in the molten cavity below Eggmanland was so that I wouldn't have to worry about all of the mechanical details. No such luck here, but I think it turned out alright.
- Man it feels good to have finally posted something new - these month long periods of inactivity because of schoolwork don't sit well with me. Then again, if I tackled a less complex project, maybe it wouldn't have taken the last week and a half.

Other notes will come up as I respond to comments.

My only complaint is that the new remix of the theme lacked a bit of the old one's energy. It sounded kinda muffled.

...I don't even know where to begin for a comment. WTF, this is amazing, get the hell out.

What exactly did you do for the Boost/Burst effect around Sonic? Did you primarily use Flash for the background as well?

Hazard-the-Porgoyle In reply to Sora-na [2011-12-13 19:53:33 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you like the result. As far as the boost effect goes, I was able to re-purpose the boost effect from this piece of mine: [link]
As for how I made that, it was a Photoshop process in which I laid down a yellow ring shape, took the smudge tool and created the streaky edges, then I think I applied a radial blur (zoom) effect on the whole result to make it a little smoother.
For the background of this piece, I made flat textures in Flash using gradients and such, then I used Photoshop's Warp tool to mold the textures into the shapes I needed. A first test for that technique, and thankfully a pretty successful one.
Thanks for the comment.

Sora-na In reply to Hazard-the-Porgoyle [2011-12-13 20:33:31 +0000 UTC]

Damn, that's pretty brilliant. And the warp doesn't pixelate the outcome since they're vector to start with, correct? I've recently started doing some linework via Flash but never thought it could be so indepth as this.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hazard-the-Porgoyle In reply to Sora-na [2011-12-13 23:00:57 +0000 UTC]

The Warp tool runs a great risk of making the final result look choppy, but I counteracted that by making the textures high resolution.
Once I export the vector graphics from Flash, they become rasterized/pixelated, so I must ensure they are large enough to remain properly detailed after the warping/distorting is complete. It's a tricky game.
I hope you have much success with your Flash endeavors.

To be brutally honest. It looks like Eggman took the Egg Dragoon from Unleashed, the Egg Wyvern from '06 and the Egg Viper from Adventure and combined them into one painstakingly tough boss. But anyway, on with the review.

The shading on Sonic looks a little light, but the fact that he's boosting explains why the shading is lighter than normal. The wings appear to lack an outline, but the striking effect that you've done on the wings would be ruined if you did an outline. The detail on the machine is impressive, but I'd have to ask why the drill part looks like it's burrowing into the floor of the stage? Also the close-up angle make the whole drawing look quite cramped. But your attention to detail is well beyond impressive. Another thing I have to ask is why is Eggman in the top half of the machine? Since he usually starts the fight in the machine's belly instead of the head. It look odd, but it'd make sense if the Egg Dragoon's on it's last legs.

Overall, the picture is pretty good. The few questions and problems that I have with it are largely outweighed by your attention to detail and I don't know what to say that would make it better.

Hazard-the-Porgoyle In reply to Touma-the-Wolfdog [2011-12-09 17:20:12 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for this in depth critique. Now that you mention it, the Egg Dragoon really does appear to be a little more related to the past final Sonic story bosses, doesn't it?
Indeed, if Sonic were not boosting, I would have handled his shading a lot differently. The light probably would have been coming exclusively from underneath, there definitely would have been more contrast, and he probably would have appeared more red. As far as the drill and the ground, it isn't penetrating the floor, it's just scraping against it. I was hoping to originally have the drill on a more similar angle to the gun arm, that is, perked up more, but when I assembled its parts, I realized it was pointing down more than I would have liked. On the bright side, the scraping drill serves as a nice nod to this past piece of mine: [link] in which the Egg Emperor's foot scraped the road.
I'll admit, I did make the boss a bit big for its arena, but that was primarily because going any smaller would have rendered many details invisible. Sonic's largeness is a perspective issue. The background's really a bit weaker than it appears, so covering more of it up worked just fine with me.
As far as Eggman's position, he changes it based on where Sonic is, not on his health. In the cutscene he goes into the belly, and this is so he can start launching ice attacks at Sonic while he's on the ground. As soon as Sonic hits the jump plate though, Eggman moves to the top of the mech so that he can start trying to use the drill arm to shoot Sonic off of the rail. Grinding to the end of this rail and approaching the head for a hit does indeed show that that is where Eggman has located himself.

I thank you for this extensive critique, I'm always glad to receive them, and I'm glad you like the piece.

It's been a while. But I think everyone is cramming right now for classes and stuff. Excellent as always. I love sonic generations. It's new and yet familiar at the same time.

I would like to let you know though that there is a typing error in the first paragraph, 6th line you say "this is a new battle, in a nearly new machine." I think you meant to put "Clearly" instead. Sorry to be a spelling and grammar troll. Just wanted to let ya know.

Indeed it's good to hear from you again. As far as the description goes, I meant nearly. The Egg Dragoon is not a brand new machine, and I like to think that Eggman did use some of the time travel related chaos to actually pluck a few parts from the first Egg Dragoon out of the past so that he would have a base to build on. It fights, moves, and looks quite different, but it is still the Egg Dragoon. It's "nearly" new, but not quite.

Dude, your stuff is amazing, you should really post your art in more high rez, the small image doesn't even look it it shows off a lot of the small details you put into everything. I would love to see this bigger, as well as a lot of your work. I saw the comment above and if it's made in flash it shouldnt be too hard to make it bigger? Unless there's another reason.

Either way, this probably has to be your best piece yet, I think. I'm speechless as to how amazing everything looks here.

Hazard-the-Porgoyle In reply to deity-of-destruction [2011-11-22 21:33:38 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes, I use the smaller resolutions of my pieces to my advantage. I construct my pieces knowing that they'll be the sizes they end up being, so that allows me to, for lack of a better term, 'simplify' some areas that would take way too much time to really construct in full high-res. The many flaws in my pieces, whether they relate to the amount of detail, or how well those details were constructed, would be glaringly obvious to everyone, and that would only bring the work down.
Only very specific components of my work are made in Flash. There is just so much that program cannot do, so Photoshop carries a great burden of the work load, and there's no scaling up what I make there without it turning blurry. Making it hi-res from the start would only make these pieces take more time than they already do.
As a final note, it irks me when I cannot see all of a person's work on one screen. It takes away from the piece's impact when I must constantly scroll up and down and up and down to see the whole thing.

At any rate, I'm glad you like what I was able to produce, and I thank you for your comment.

Hm. Well I can see where you're coming from with that. It still looks good small though, don't get me wrong. If it's made with vectors usually it's not hard to change the size of things, but if it's not entirely then that makes sense. Making the work harder would just be annoying I understand.

A lot of people have larger monitors now a days though, so when I was looking at the image fullsize it barely reaches halfway across my screen, so maybe that's why it seems really small for me, but again what you say makes sense.

Either way, still, good work dude! I always love seeing stuff from you, you've got some serious talent.

Ah, resolution, there's something I haven't considered. I'm at 1024 x 768, so the piece above fills up my browser window quite nicely, but I can see how it might appear piddly on others' screens.

I'm glad you like the work I put into this. As far as its actual size, it's simply what you see here. The original copy of the boss, minus wing effects, minor shading tweaks, and the beehive barriers, is within Flash, and because it was created with that vector graphics based program, it can be any size I choose without degradation. The rest of it, though, is really just the size displayed on your monitor.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Steel-Avatar In reply to Hazard-the-Porgoyle [2011-11-21 21:28:29 +0000 UTC]

Whoa, this is vector based? In FLASH?!

I thought you used photoshop. Honest. It seems like a better suited program. I had no clue an animation program could do something as amazing as this.

I mean, they're pretty awesome in their own right, but when I consider wrapping textures around objects and creating complex gradients, I think of photoshop, not a vector program.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hazard-the-Porgoyle In reply to Steel-Avatar [2011-11-21 21:49:13 +0000 UTC]

Indeed the boss, its shading job (gradients), Sonic's line art, and the background textures were all made in Flash. Photoshop's warp tool was vital for shaping the BG, shading Sonic and giving him his special effects, and giving the boss its wings and a few other details. That's the way I've always worked - a divided workload between Flash and Photoshop. See this for details: [link]
