Description
No one has permission to re-post this. Period.Vs. the Egg Dragoon
Sonic, having come so close to restoring his shattered world, faces a familiar machine, but without the power of his cursed form. The Werehog turns out to not be needed in this case though, because the mechanical titan is very different from its last incarnation. Its speed parallels Sonic's, its attacks appear to have been adapted to this new speed, and it is deadlier than ever. To Eggman, this is no coincidence; for him, this is not an old moment in time reinvigorated, no, this is a new battle in a nearly new machine, an improvement on an old failure. While Dark Gaia's power may not have influenced the creation of this Egg Dragoon, it will still prove to be a dangerous machine for our blue hero to face...
Production Notes:
- Well that was certainly a challenge. The main reason I drew the Unleashed 360 Egg Dragoon piece in the molten cavity below Eggmanland was so that I wouldn't have to worry about all of the mechanical details. No such luck here, but I think it turned out alright.
- Man it feels good to have finally posted something new - these month long periods of inactivity because of schoolwork don't sit well with me. Then again, if I tackled a less complex project, maybe it wouldn't have taken the last week and a half.
Other notes will come up as I respond to comments.

Jesus Christ
finally you made a generations piece boss and with the deadly egg dragoon 2.0
long time no see, man
if the goal with your piece was to give the illusion to be "in-game'. IT REALLY SUCCEEDED
I will tell you why
Firstly, seriously, this is what I call art, Iβm impressed by the amount of perfection behind the level perspective, you see, this is real 3D for me. This is the best thing about pic, and help a lot the epicness, well done
Next, love the way you colored Sonic, heβs neither too bright nor too dark, just slightly illuminated by its own boost, love it :3
Second thing about sonic, you draw sonic so perfect as if he came straight from the game itself, he looks more an official 3D sonic model than a simple sonic drawing with various 3D effects, wonderful.
Then, Egg dragoon is the ultimate badass, the pose is flawless and menacing, this is all about serious business right now. I think you've improved on all matters relating to the mechanical parts, to a point whereβ¦well I'm not sure if I look at a drawing or a screenshot of the game XD
Your pic made me realize how I really miss your art. Welcome back ^^
you have reached my expectations, A great game deserve an epic piece of art, and that's what you have just given

Indeed it has been a while, and I'm happy to be back in business.
The warp tool of a more recent version of Photoshop (made available by my school) was instrumental in getting the background shaped the way it needed to be shaped. While I have access to that tool, I will be sure to take advantage of it.
I'm glad you think Sonic turned out well. He was certainly a tricky component to get right. Thanks for noticing the illumination caused by the boost. I thought that would make for a nice touch.
I've certainly learned a few things about metal and how to shade it, and with any luck, I'll be able to put that knowledge to good use in the near future.
I certainly hope to keep up the pace with these pieces, and I hope to not disappoint.
Thanks for the comment and critique.

I think I just might have developed an unhealthy love for your artwork. This piece is PERFECT. I have no gripes whatsoever. The 3D feel of the image is perfect, Sonic's coloring is perfect, the boost surrounding him is perfect. The detail in the area and on Egg Dragoon itself is perfect.
Flawless. Your metal-work this time around exceeds my expectations. As you may recall, one of my problems with a last piece of yours was that the metal looked too similar to the texture of a character. I am very pleased to say that cannot be said here.

I'm definitely glad you like the result - churning this one out was like traveling through a never-ending gauntlet. I'm glad to hear your opinion on Sonic, because he was the element of this piece I had the most doubts about.
What helped with the metal texture work here was having the proper resources. I was able to create gradients based on screens of the battle and the boss's official artwork, which I then made fit the new line art. I'll certainly have to see about keeping that up, even when faced with sources that say I should make the shading more plain.

I can't reveal just what boss is up next, but I can say that Sonic 2 (16-bit) fans will be happy; I've avoided this one for a long time until now.
BG and Sonic are done already. It should be good.

I must say, my man; sometimes you just have your low days--where your artwork ends up...not looking as good as some of your other stuff. I'm happy to report, however, that that's not the case with this piece. It really is well-done and, had I forgotten why I watched you in the first place (which I haven't) this one would certainly serve as a reminder.
WEll done, sir.

Yet again, that is a very nice job you're doing here.
I do think that Sonic's shading could have more contrast though. He seems a bit flat.

I'm glad you like the result, and as far as Sonic's shading goes, it's that boost effect that's causing that lack of contrast. If I were to remove the top layer of the blue streaks, the blues would differ more. Here's the shot I used as reference for the effect: [link] (Admittedly, because of the sunny locale and boost effect in that shot, his highlights are a bit strong, but other than that, the blue is pretty consistent throughout.)
Thanks for the comment and critique, as always.

I'm so glad dA finally did away with their inane 30 character limit for titles. Maybe now I can go back and make some of the titles of my past pieces what I've always wanted.
Indeed for this piece, accuracy was a big deal. The boss turned out great, and I'll take the BG as it is, but I could have handled it a little better. I'd probably have needed to access resources that aren't currently available to pull that one off though.
Glad you like the piece, and thanks for the comment.

This was he best boss in Generations, heck known of the other bosses, including the Time Eater, weren't as challenging as the Egg Dragoon.
No telling how much time it took you to do this.

Hazard-the-Porgoyle In reply to NextGrandcross [2011-11-19 23:24:39 +0000 UTC]
Thank you for this comment. If I had to put some rough estimates into the amount of time it took to do this...
(And keep in mind that many of the portions were completed around schoolwork)
A day and a half for the Boss's arms.
A day for the lower body.
A day each for the portions of the upper body.
Other objects and special effects on the boss all added up to about half a day.
One day for the background textures and the warping needed to get their shape.
Half a day for all other background elements.
And today's project was Sonic, half a day.
So, if I cut out the days where I wasn't able to work on this piece at all, I'd say it took about 7 days. I probably could have gotten it done in 5 if there were less school related distractions.
