"...NO MOAR APPELZ!?! *implode*"Someone's having a hissyfit... So, no, he's not spooking or anything, just having a major dramaqueenspazzattack. Methinks he wants to break a leg. xP
This is my bid for *thunderjam1992 's TB yearling rescue auction , on Hip #4 . I knew I had to apply for him when I read his profile, lol. Plus, he has birdcatcher spots! I've always wanted a TB with spotsies. I need to build up my TB stock, too.
Sooo, let's hope I get this guy! :3 EDIT: We got him!!
Aaand, no critique please. >.< Here's a two-second sidestory of when we first got him.
-----
"Hay," the redheaded groom asked his superior, "have ya heard o' that Thorahbred rescue in Cali? BCC stables pulled out aroun'... 10 'orses from a dump o' a place." The Irishman paused, attentively watching the ranch owner's expression of growing curiosity. "Turns out TJ's auctioning off most o' 'em."
Double Dance stables knew of Black Creek Crossing stables' quality racehorses and had even made business with them not long ago, with Flawless Evil, the rabicano Arabian DDS finally couldn't keep after all. The thought made DD's owner feel a little disheartened. She didn't want to go ahead and buy a Thoroughbred yearling and make it look like they were maybe not going to keep it, like with what had happened to Flavie.
Yet this was entirely different. Before, they were downsizing, yet now, DDS needed more Thoroughbred stock.
The idea was settled the morning after, and three staff members flew in to BCC stables for the second time in about a month. On the day of the auction, they scoured the site to find a suitable racehorse, and were finding the task rather difficult indeed. All of the yearlings here were exceptional, and no one could agree on who to bid for the ranch's next potential rising star and future breeding stock.
Finally, in the late afternoon, when Desrosiers, the head groom, was just about ready to draw straws on the matter, the threesome heard a cacophony of aggravated yells coming from the back room, where the horses were kept before being brought out in front of the viewers and bidders. All eyes shifted towards the source of the noise. Before long, a slightly disproportionate, flashy red colt was led into the circle, his eyes wide with mischief, the poor handler's shoulder and head covered in horse slobber, the man's formal black jacket torn at the right sleeve, as well as his forearm slightly bloody, and the other half of the black fabric hanging nonchalantly from the chestnut's maw.
"Him," the three staff members spoke in unison, a devious smirk on their faces.

Barn Name: Spot; His Lord Obnoxious; Holden
Gender: Colt
D.O.B.: 02/01/2008
Breed: Thoroughbred
Bloodline: Purebred (Jockey Club)
Phenotype: Chestnut (with blaze, LF stocking with ermine spot, RH sock with ermine spots, 2 white shoulder birdcatcher spots on left side, 1 on right flank.)
Eyes: Brown
Genotype: aa/ee/nBCS (40% chance of foals having mild birdcatcher spotting)
Height: 16.1hh (projected 16.3hh)
Build: At the moment, he's your standard very unbalanced, wonky, high-butt yearling (here, he's pictured a little after we bought him – if it happens, lol – when he's maybe a 2 or 3-year-old.) We're suspecting he may be a late-bloomer, but only time will confirm this. If he flourishes too late, we'll try to start his racing career a little later too, like 3 years old, to make sure he's adequately put together. He's a pretty big fellow though, so we're assuming he should grow into a nice, strapping lad. He has big, expressive eyes (note how I didn't say "intelligent"), slightly large, hard feet (future turf-runner, mayhaps?), good straight leg conformation, long and thin limbs, sometimes has a bit of an ewe-neck (we can tell this is just from habit, though, and should be easily trained out of him), big chest, large prominent withers, occasionally tends to stand somewhat camped out with his hinds, huge shoulders and very muscular hind. His mane and tail are a little bit frizzy/wavy, too.
Breeder: Black Creek Crossing Stables (well, that's the previous owner; breeder is unknown)
Owner/trainer: ~Hazel-rah of Double Dance.
Temperament: “Obnoxious. Very very obnoxious. When management was selecting horses for the auction, most of the staff members all but shoved His Lordship at them. He's cute, don't get us wrong, but he's SO ANNOYING. He bites calves and elbows when he's being walked, he gnaws on fingers and slobbers all over clothing. He'll balk and go wide-eyed with "fear" like any true drama queen just for the hell of it and then suddenly calm down a few seconds later and carry on as if nothing had happened. We suspect he is going to be oh so much fun on the racetrack.
History: We don't know how he managed to end up at Last Stop Farms, where he was getting fattened up for the slaughterhouse. Upon seeing the photos of him when BBC stables rescued him and the 9 other Thoroughbreds, our stomachs churned. He wasn't exactly fat (TBs never look fat, lol), so we assume he hadn't been there for very long, but he looked rather miserable, covered in caked mud, manure, urine stains, and tangles in his bushy mane. His feet were a mess, too, but thankfully, he has pretty hardy hooves for a TB. We're really watching his nutrition and trying to fill all of his dietary needs, with a strict feeding plan monitored by our nutritionist and vets. We're just hoping he'll grow normally, even after having a rocky start.
Discipline(s): Future track (flat) racer
Ideal Distance/Turf/Running Position: N/A
Awards & Winnings: N/A
Offspring: N/A
Restrictions: Must be bred to realistic colored, pure Thoroughbred mares only (please DevNote me to discuss otherwise.)
Availability: Currently unavailable for private bookings.

I want to say here, kudos to the names of your horses. Always creative, and literary references are always a special kind of win. <3 Especially with the birdcatcher spots.
(The Flying Dutchman / Ghost is another favorite clever naming of yours. )
And, as always, enjoyable horse art! I have KNOWN this horse, in so many other horses. x_X

Lawl, thank you so much! I try really hard [sometimes] to make them witty, so I'm very glad you noticed. There's also DD Bat-and-Ball/Cricket who's a polo pony, but that's a really crappy one, rofl. I'm more in the groove with it when I name my TBs, teehee...
Yes, there's also a gelding that I ride that's very similar (nay, identical, aside from the hotblooded-ness ) to this boy.
I think everyone's owned, seen or worked with a "Holden" before!

I love this, your style fits him perfectly. Looks kinda scary though, with his front leg going through the reins like that.
I hope you get him

Lol, yeah, I was going for that feeling that people facepalm because they think he's so dumb and annoying. Freaking out over apples so much that he balks/rears/panics and manages to get his foot caught in the reins, nearly breaking his leg or something. And then, the staff starts questioning themselves on why they chose him.
Thanks!

Lol yeah, well I find those horses the most adorable because they have some spirit in them, even if it makes them dumb and annoying

Yeah, and that dumb and annoying wouldn't be too good for the hunter circuit, lmao.

Thank you. At least you could maybe recycle your headshot you did of him, and make a new pic of him, but like.. as an Appendix QH, or something, and make his markings and personality a little different, just so it doesn't copy thunderjam's.

AshtonPony In reply to Hazel-rah [2009-11-15 15:13:43 +0000 UTC]
xD Yeah, but actually I just have to finish his tail for the fullbody now lol But yeah, If you will I'll just change a few things, but no QH's xD

Well, assuming you're not entering and all (I can't remember if the deadline was the 14th or 15th? xD), I'd maybe darken/lighten the coat color (at least that's easy to do, lol), add a few more or less chrome markings (shouldn't be too hard either, if you're using layers), and maybe take off the birdcatcher spots, so that the future owner, whoever it is, doesn't feel like there's a carbon copy running around. And, I was just suggesting an Appendix because they're half TB, and would at least resemble your drawing, I would think (plus, I read you wanted Hip #4 as a hunter prospect, and you don't have to have pure TBs for that. ^^) Just a though.
That's what I'm doing, anyway, if I don't win. I'll keep him TB, but I'll change most everything else. Maybe make him a liver chestnut instead, alter his height, take away his markings, and stuff like that. ^^

He looks fantastic in your style!!! And he suits the name perfectly! Did ya know that Catcher in the Rye is actually a pretty decent Irish stallion standing at coolmore?
I wasn't complaining about his name at all, just thought it was a nice fun fact to know

Hazel-rah In reply to Pliochippus [2009-11-14 19:10:25 +0000 UTC]
Nope, didn't know that. For a second, when I was reading, I thought you were going to say "there's already a HARPG horse with that name." xD I would've died. I think it suits him really nicely. It fits the max-18-letter TB name rule, it fits his persona, and it fits his birdcatcher-ness.
Thanks!

I do hate when you name a horse, then someone tells you another horse already exists with the name. And I love that you know about the max 18 letter rule.... so many people don't and have horses with ridiculously long names like "I said she said that you said that he said we said you don't know"
Aren't I easily amused LOL
Most welcome hun!!
