waiiiiit a sec, is the protagonist (hero) of adventure time actually a girl? I don't know anything of the series, so cut me some slack on the question.

Not officially for the series. This version of adventure time you see here is really more of the fan favorite. A while back, on of the animators for adventure time made a drawing of the Hero in a genderbent drawing on Tumblr. Since then, many fans of Adventure time had started drawing that same girl in the artwork, genderbending the rest of the show's cast as time went on.
Soon enough, it became so mainstream that it was acknowledged by the producers of the show, and the show itself eventually had an episode focused entirely on the gender swap based universe the fans had created.

*O* amazing!!! not only are the three characters awesome XD but your amazing skillz blow me away as well!! the cute chibi proportions are perfect, and the way you do the eyes has always made them pop out-I swear it looks like they're glowing!
the colors of everything else is also beautiful, the shading is amazing, and the highlights on the hair gives the piece abother wonderful shade
