Description Just finished up a colour version of the pretty boy pirate I did at Gencon this year. I tried something new for transfering it.

Here's a link to the original for you to check out. It was grey scale marker on bristol.

I scanned in the original, then printed out a light version on regular paper. I then mounted it on my regular illustration board using acrylic matt medium. This was semi successful. The backing layer worked fine but brushing a top layer over the paper make the paper degrade a bit. I let it try thoroughly and then began working washes over colour over it, starting thin and moving up more and more opaquely. The acrylic reacted oddly to the paper ie didn't sink it and "stick" as well as I'm used to. I had to use more layers and let them dry pretty way before adding more.

Here's the results. I liked being able to work over the shaded copy but the way the paint and paper interacted was difficult. I kinda like the results and am thinking of other ways to approach using a copy as a base. I will have to consider this more....hmm.

The original is for sale for $60 if any one is interested. Prints too
8 1/2x11 acrylic on illustration board paper.

Very well done. I love the gold and blue contrast, and the way the light hits his hair. I have a difficult time with acrylic... and settings for my characters.

Is he based off of anything in particular?

Nope, the original sketch was done as a table sketch at last year's Gencon and I wanted to paint it up since I liked him so much

That's incredible! Inspiration doesn't usually hit me so randomly, though I really wish that it did!

I usually pull my art from characters created for role-playing games, generally our pen-and-paper ones. Dungeons and Dragons, that sort of thing. Never had a great imagination to draw otherwise.
