The crisp November air had all of the horses invigorated, and Fade was no exception. Eliza steered him straight as they stepped onto the track. Normally one of the actual jockeys would be riding him, but they were busy with other horses, so she'd wound up on him instead. Luckily, she was confident enough to handle him.

This was his first race, so this was a big day for him. At least the track was firm today. Fade happily pranced down the track, eager to get going. He gave his mane a quick flick, and Eliza stroked his neck. "Soon, buddy," she said. "Just another minute. Don't go running on me yet."

Fade, thankfully, behaved while they were lining up. It took a minute for everyone to settle down, but then they were all in line and ready to start. Eliza got ready, making sure she was balanced in the saddle. It wouldn't do for her to fall off as soon as they took off.

The bell rang, and Fade leapt forward. They'd gotten a spot near the rail, so Eliza urged him ahead quickly so they didn't get boxed in. The other horses spread out around them, all jockeying for a good spot.

It was only a five furlong race, so the end came up quick. Eliza urged Fade to run faster, hoping to keep his nose in the lead. The wire flashed by, and just like that, they were done.

She pulled Fade up, slowing him to a canter, then a trot. She'd been so focused on riding and not falling that she couldn't tell if they'd kept the lead all the way to the end, but at least they'd come out unscathed. She gave Fade a vigorous rubbing, showering him with praise. He'd done very well today.

FINALLY, I got an entry done for this show. Hopefully I'll get the rest of my planned entries done before the new deadline.
