Description Inked over pencils by Roger Cruz.

So - I haven't had much of a chance to do anything by way of folio or practice pieces for a while.

I've had this scanned and siitting on my hard drive for a while, but it's taken forever to get around to cleaning it up and preparing it for display.

Inked with a variety of pens, from my chunky Faber Castells and Pentel brush pen down to my new discoveries - Refillable Copic multiliners. I've got two of those now, in 0.05 and 0.03 guages. I've found that those really handle fine detail well, and i can get cleaner lines than I could previously.

However, STILL lots of work to do with my inking. Roger's detailed pencils don't leave much room for an inker to embellish. There's a few little yhings that I did here, but mostly I've been concentrating on establishing space and planar perspective - VERY difficult with something like panel 2.

The next step will be to see if I can't get those lines down even cleaner and add a little more original rendering to the art. It's harder than you'd think!

Cheers, Paul!

To be honest, Roger's pencils leave VERY little room for embellishment, so this is 99% him. But that's cool - at the stage I'm at in my inking, it's really what I need. Just going over pencils liek this gives me a better idea of how and why certain lines and strokes are used.

Exactly! As for my own inking experiences, I really needed to get comfortable before I would concern myself with all kinds of wild techniques such as cross-hatching and difficult shading. Before, inking used to be an arduous task as I was focused on not messing up; nowadays I dare say it can even be relaxing (but occasinally, still very frustrating and time-consuming!)

Proper line thickness variation is initialy one of the hardest things to accomplish, if only because you have to work out what pens to use and gain a frame of reference with regard to what works visually. from looking at this, you're doing great. Keep it up!
