Description
not really teeth, but that title sounds better than big jaws or big pinchersi used to go to this after school program when i was in elementary school. it was really awesome, the director of the camp made us all cabins in a big clearing, organized trips to hunt for rocks and was basically the kind of person you would love as a little kid.
anyways, there were these little cone shaped burrows in the dirt that these creatures made to catch ants that we were really curious about.
you see, they dig down into the dirt backwards and spray the dirt back out in a way that creates a cone shaped hole. ants fall into the hole and the walls are made at just the right angle so that they can't get back out. while the ant is trying to get out, the creature i'm holding feels the vibrations and climbs up, grabs hold of the ant with its jaws and eats it. very efficient way to hunt and live at the same time. i used to be facscinated with these guys, and despite their fierce appearance they are harmless (unless you're an ant).
we would put an ant into their burrow and wait for a spray of sand to signal their arrival; then we would scoop up the whole pile of dirt and sift through it until we found a buggy. if you put dirt into your hand they burrow down into it and it feels really weird when they get to your hand
the other day i was walking through a park and i saw one of those holes. i luckily had my camera with me so i dug around for a minute untill i found one. (i had to use a stick instead of an ant to lure it out, couldn't find any ants) my favorite kind of bug, and i don't even know what it is, if you know please tell me!

Pretty cool, and it would be an Antlion larva ([link] ). I don't know about you, but I wouldn't dig around for those things.
