This is my entry for 's Design a Swordsman contest.
Name: Akino Kaede (Maple leaf of Autumn)
Sword: Kagebuyou (Dancing Shadow)
Taught the art of the sword by her wise grandfather, Kaede protects her small villiage from raiders and bandits. She hopes to one day find the theives that killed her father, and avenge his death. Swift and agile, her technique was honed by splitting leaves as they fell from the trees during Autumn as a child.
"As swift and graceful as the shadow of a dancing leaf."

Sketched in under two hours, scanned and lined in PSP 7 in another hour, Six hours deciding on colors and finally coloring. Leaf texture and effect added later in PSP 8.

Is the handle wrapping gold ribbon or brown leather?

In keeping with the original design, I'd say brown leather, but if ribbon is easier to wrap with, then use ribbon.

Both are just as easy. It's purely a matter of appearance. And getting a long enough piece of leather.

One question Do you want it painted to look as pictured or do you want it with a varnish finish? Your character is named Maple Leaf of Autumn and I am making this in maple wood.

Given the choice, I'd like to see it painted as it's pictured. Specifically the gold tsuba. That's the part that originally got me drawing this. I wanted the leaf shaped tsuba to really stand out most of all. That was the point to begin with, as it was for *chioky 's contest, and he does so many of the tsuba drawings. I can't wait to see it come to life. I'm SO excited!

The tsuba is going to be the fun part. I want to go all out with this one so it will be with blood groove, scabbard, the works. So it will take a while.

Wow, you're going to do a scabbard as well? That's awesome! One part of the scabbard that I definately want to see is the gold swirl that wraps around the bottom, and the little leaf accent. Those little detais really make it POP, y'know?

The gold swirls will be easy it's the maple leaves that will be full...and being Canadian I'd better do it right.
