Description Self with Shadow
2008
Oil On Canvas
22"x28"

This is another of the doppelganger series. This one deals with the Jungian concept of The Shadow, the dark, unconscious side that we all have within ourselves yet we don't have access to.

This is beautiful, the way you use your paints and your technique reminds me a lot of Lucian Freud.

I love surrealism/realism in this, and the style is amazing: It's very interesting to look at. The concept you introduce in this is something that we talked about in our college class. How writers have the Other which comes out in their diaries.

Lovely piece. I enjoy the play on light and shadows very much, most of all in the fabrics. The work on the hand resting on her chest/stomach is also so well done.

nice. i used to do a lot of work with multiple versions of myself and have started back up with that idea recently. it's interesting to see how other people handle the subject matter.

Very talented, I would like to see your work in real...

This is amazing. One thing I've noticed about all of your work is that you have always seemed to be able to get the values just at that point where the piece seems to teeter on the border of reality.

I like it.

ah, this is so gorgeous and calm, yet vaguely disquieting... I'm at a loss for words, but honestly, I love it! It all looks very natural, the poses and the hands especially- beautiful work, really.

i completely adore your work. really. every time you update your gallery with a new piece I get so excited. I look at it over and over again until you update again. we just finished a model sesion in class and my piece was highly inspired by your work. even though it is in my style... the grey tones that you seem to use so well were used in it. i really really love your work. i could say beautiful things about every one of your creations. please keep inspiring young artist like me... your work speaks volumes.

You captured this REALLY well; I didn't even read the title and thought of Jung's shadow (and I'm an accountant, that's a mind leap). The shadow's judgemental expression really speaks to me; I can relate with an inner 'critic'/strength of mine. Beautiful painting.

HeatherHorton In reply to yourgen [2008-03-06 22:26:36 +0000 UTC]

LOL, well technically both are self...but when I painted it I felt as though the figure on the right was the self...the figure on the left is the Shadow...
