Description Itty (big) and Lacy (small).

Itty is 14 years old and Lacy is maybe 6 months if she's lucky.

Itty is undergoing surgery tomorrow to remove what is thought to be a liver tumor. She may not survive, but at least she's had a good life. She was my first hognose snake, and I got her when I was in 4th grade. If she goes, she will be greatly missed...

Rest peacefully Itty, we all love you lots and I will miss you as a best friend and child all wrapped into one little snake. There will never be another like you and I hope I get to see you again. February 11, 2007.

The female one died while on liver tumor surgery. Five years later, his mate died as well. At least they died around at 15-18 years of age...

Loved the big nose! Rest in Peace Itty.

BTW, Do they get along in groups? Just curious, but I thought most snakes prefered to be on their own.

HeatherTelesca In reply to gabrielsangel [2010-10-13 18:23:12 +0000 UTC]

I keep them all separated normally, but the hognoses visit with each other sometimes when they are out of their cages. My rule is if they could meet in the wild, they can meet in captivity. (Keep in mind I don't have any king snakes.)

I've also kept babies together for a year or two...if you have two animals that are around the same size keeping them together isn't too bad, but you have to make sure they never get fed in their cage. Take them out and feed them separately so they don't start to associate each other with food and things go pretty smoothly.

Gottcha! I understand food is a HUGE issue, especially with animals.

Is there a good way to guess a snake's age? I got mine five months ago and I'm not sure how old she was before that.

Awsome pic, faved it.

I had a question though. How big is itsy? And would my wild cought one get as big?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HeatherTelesca In reply to docszoo223 [2006-12-21 00:25:37 +0000 UTC]

She is some where between 28 and 30 inches long. Most hognoses reach about 24 at the most. I'm sure there are large hognoses out there, but I have never seen another one as big as she is. They are usually a little smaller like "Ditty" (He's shown in another photo). I hope this helps!

Wow. My boy is about 18" and is about 3 years old. I know the males tend to be smaller in general...but I guess my boy is just a shrimp

How'd Itty's surgery go?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HeatherTelesca In reply to maiem [2006-12-24 15:36:03 +0000 UTC]

Heehee--don't worry! My boy is a shrimp too! We thought we had somehow stunted his growth until we found out Itty was just large for a hognose!

Itty is doing ok, unfortunately they couldn't take the tumor out, which makes for some very tough decisions now...

Oh that's precious.

How long do hognoses normally live if they're taken care of as well as you do?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HeatherTelesca In reply to Koyukionna [2006-12-13 23:07:40 +0000 UTC]

If well taken care of, most snakes can last anywhere from 10-20 years depending on the species. Some species of rattlers can live to almost 50 in zoos, which is rather amazing.

LOL...couldn't be further from the truth but thanks all the same! She isn't a "cute" snake, and looks downright mean a lot of the time, but she is a sweety just the same.

BTW, she has a cataract that you can see in this photo...have you ever seen a snake so old it has a cataract? Thank goodness they're eyesight sucks to begin with!

Oh, I thought it was just the flash or something, being a photography dunce. Me? I just point and shoot with my mom's digital camera. XD

She might not be cute, but it's what's in the inside that counts.

My corn snake looks evil and she is evil. It works out. My ball pythons have cute fatty cheeks. They're nice and mellow. I wonder how that worked out?
