He pretty much thinks his entire team is american and the enemy is captured-and-brainwashed americans and various american historical enemies (such as the nazis and soviets).

This is the soldier we are talking about here. Just remember that, and don't give his intelligence to much credit. After all, he did win a nose picking contest (I'm not entirely sure how such a competition would function, let alone how it would be judged.)
