Banjo, "Hey got a message from-" Β *is vaporized byΒ Galeem*
Yooka-Laylee, "Don't worry, we'll take your name, and then you'll have to use the name of your mentor instead, which will make no sense, but copyright lawyers are more powerful than narrative common sense."

If we're being honest, B&K will most likely never make it in. It isn't up to Sakauri nor is it up to Nintendo, because they don't own the rights to use them, nor have they ever. Banjo 1 and 2 were never ported to the Wii Virtual Console, nor the Wii U. Even looking back on past Smash games, there are no trophies or stickers of any B&K characters at all, nor any references in any Nintendo game that I can think of. They clearly legally cannot even allude to B&K in any way, shape, or form.
Rareware is owned by Microsoft, and re-releases of B&K have only been on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One (and Nuts and Bolts was made but not many liked it).
Imagine Nintendo approaching Microsoft, their competing company, and Nintendo asks if they can use their Intellectual Property in a game that will make millions of dollars. Microsoft is obviously going to refuse. The only way they'll lend B&K out is withΒ tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars from Nintendo first. How much exactly? No one can say, but it's clearly not cheap. These are competing companies. It's probably Microsoft's dream for Nintendo to go bankrupt, because that means more people will buy their games and consoles on the open market with one less competitor. So until Nintendo happens to win a couple lotteries and have an extra billion dollars in their pocket, B&K aren't going anywhere.
Why do you think Yooka Laylee exists? Because people realized that B&K will probably never leave Microsoft's grasp.
The same goes for Geno, who is owned by Square Enix.
Nintendo and Square are on a bit more friendly of terms, but that doesn't mean Nintendo can do whatever they want. Again, there has been no mention of anything from Super Mario RPG in any other game. Geno did make a cameo in Superstar Saga on the GBA, but it was removed in the 3DS remake. Smash 4 did get a Geno costume for Mii Gunner, so I wouldn't say it's 100% impossible, just improbable.
Yes, Cloud is in Smash. But pretty much just Cloud. Ever wonder why his stage only has 2 songs? Licensing costs. Nintendo has to get the rights to use Final Fantasy songs though Square Enix, and license them for a game that sees a worldwide release. Every country the game is releasing in, countries that didn't even get said Final Fantasy game licensed in, Nintendo need to legally license the use of them. Through Square Enix. It's a hassle, both from a legal and marketing perspective. Brawl has a Forest Maze song hidden in its files that was cut from the final game, presumably because it was either too difficult and costly to leave in, or simply because Square Enix said no.Β
With all this in mind, I wouldn't get your hopes up on some of these characters.

Geno is improbable now that Nintendo is making the choices for the DLC. Sakurai not only knew that fans wanted Geno but he also wanted Geno in Smash Bros. himself (Nintendo will likely just use the DLC to promote new games).
As for Banjo-Kazooie, Phil Spencer (the head of Xbox) has said repeatablely that he is fine with Banjo-Kazooie being in Smash Bros so it IS up to Nintendo to include him.
