Description
Lateral arm in neutral position and flexed at the elbow. Same as the picture in my scraps, but I cleaned it up a little. I didn't have room to label all the muscles, but most of them are labeled. Mechanical pencil on paper.Related content

Hi! Sorry for the late repy, but I've had a lot going on. I'll try to draw more muscles, thank you!
It would be good practice...

Really well done... what an excellent technical anatomy study. I'd love to see it with just a little more contrast so it really pops out of the page, but this works well too. Neato.

Thank you! I increased the contrast from the original scan, but tried to stick close to the contrast of the pencil. I might try pushing that a little more with my next anatomy study, because I do like how it looks with more contrast. Thanks for the comment, I was actually wondering whether I should stick with the natural contrast of the drawing, or bring it out more.

You are getting me motivated to look into my medical illustration books. Did you ever see "Body Worlds". It was in Chicago last year... I think you'd like it... it should be on the internet.

I'm glad I'm motivating you! I'd definately recommend artist anatomy books, as well as medical texts, though, as I've found the artist books much more helpful to the realm of arting. I love this stuff, though. I could read anatomy and kinesiology books for days on end. I'll definately have to look for the "Body Worlds".

It may be perspective or I may just not see it correctly, but the bicep seems to be rather small in comparison to the forearm. I mean, I know it's shorter (the arm is in an up, flexed position), but it doesn't seem "deep" enough (the distance around the bicep/tricep should be larger than the forearm... right?)
Anyway, I really like the relaxed arm!
I like your handwriting too btw (very crisp, though flowing)
I'm liking your whole anatomy study

Thanks, AudacityRacing. I'm enjoying reviewing anatomy. Glad you like my handwriting.
The biceps brachii is not as large as we tend to think it is. The bulk of the anterior forearm is actually made up more by the deeper lying brachialis. The biceps crosses two joints - the glenohumeral joint (at the shoulder) and the elbow, so it's actions are flexion at the shoulder and elbow, as well as supination of the forearm (turning the palm upward). The fact that it crosses two joints and has so many actions it performs, makes it a weaker muscle. The brachialis only crosses the elbow and only does flexion at the elbow, so it is the main sorce of strength when it comes to doing curles and such. Because the biceps is superficial to the brachialis, it is the muscle that we see. In comparison, the bulk of the calf is made up by the deep muscle, solaris. This is also the stronger muscle, as it again only crosses one joint. The gastrocnemius is superficial and is, therefore the muscle we see and think of as being the 'calf muscle'. There is (or was, not sure if it's still performed) a surgical procedure that removed the soleus in a baby with a club foot. This would relieve the stress on the calcaneous and allow the foot to be normal, while the action of plantar flexion could still be performed by the gastrocnemius and other muscles. I once saw a person who'd had his soleus removed. It was quite startling to see how small his calf was, especially compared to his other leg, which still had the soleus intact.
Thanx for asking that, I love reviewing this stuff.
