Description
My latest for the collection of our local wildlife, a red squirrel. My sister took the photo from her flat window and I really liked the composition of the twigs and the animal on it - Shame she could only take this one photo before her cat decided to chase after it.

Sorry for the bad photo quality. I normally scan my paintings, but it still needs drying. It wasn't easy to take a photo without any reflections of the wet oil paint yet still showing the gold.

Unfortunately, there are not many Eurasian red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) left in the UK. Their numbers have decreased drastically in recent years, a decline associated with the introduction of the North American grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis). The grey squirrels population appears to be able to out-compete the red squirrel population: The grey squirrel can carry a disease, the squirrel parapox virus, which is deadly to the red squirrel but won't affect the health of the grey squirrels. As well, grey squirrels can digest acorns, the red squirrel cannot. Most british woodland consists of oak trees, therefor it is much easier for the grey squirrels to find food.

The positive and negative space here is such a dynamic effect, especially using the gold! What is gold patina? Is it a paint?

Beautifully rendered. The transition of light-to-dark and the soft balance of highlights against shadows is pleasing to the eye. You kept the environment interesting and appealing without detracting from the main focus of the composition. Lovely work!

Lovely piece! The squirrel is beautiful, and your technique is fascinating. You may say that the photo quality is poor, but you managed to get the gold to show well. Congrats on the DD!

Wow you have a red squirrel near you? So lucky! We just have the grey ones, although there's a wildlife place I've been to where you can go in the red squirrel enclosure and one came right up to us. It was really sweet - I love their little ears
This painting is beautiful, I really love how you've used the gold - you've got the balance perfect and the whole piece really 'pops'...if that makes sense? Anyway, this is fabulous

Thank you so much!!
Oh, I live in Surrey, there are no red squirrels either. Only grey ones. I grew up in the Black Forest though, where my sister still lives, and she took the photo I used as references. There are so many of them, they have been considered a nuisance. They were coming in open windows, raiding kitchen and jumping all over the place... My mother used to call them jumping rats, haha. I love them, they are really sweet!

I really like the inter mingling colors of the leaves, shifting through off-white, light brown and gold.
Great work!
