Thank you very much!
The rock salt gives the structure in the dark blue parts of the upper back. I sprinkled it on the wet watercolour, and it sucks the liquid out of the paint. Once dried, you can just shake the salt off. It's a great effect, and you can never quite predict the effect it will leave.

Wow, all right, I think this might be one of my favourites (and I hope you won't hate me for saying that). I love its boldness and clean contrasts . . . And I admire anyone who can make use of pattern and manage to not get bogged down in clutter. I think my favourite part of this is the crown, actually . . . It's a subtle component, but so symbolic and a perfect 'cherry on top' for the whole piece. Wonderful!

you know, it's actually one of my favourites as well
Mainly because I find it sooo very hard NOT to paint exactly what I see, but to come up with something else. I might be good in reproducing in a realistic way, but I find it extremely hard to let go.....Boy, that was a fight on this one!!!! (....constantly: must not use blue and green, no, must not paint real feathers, no no!! )
It helped me a lot to use different materials like wall paper to patch it together, at least it's then not the blank white paper staring at me.
Sorry for my super late answer by the way, I'm a bit crap in answering straight away. It's because English is not my native language and it takes me a while to express myself...drives me crazy, I should have paid more attention in school when I had the chance, he he

Is it a turkey being vain or an evil, vain, peacock?
This is beautiful, the colors are just confusing me.

The shape is a peacock, only the colours are not right. It needed different colours to have a bit more of an evil touch..... Glad I confuse, that was the plan, he he (evil peacock laughing his evil laugh)!

Thank you!!!!! Yes, I would love to become a bit more "free" in my artistic expression and do more in this direction, I normally stuck a lot in my realistic realm. To be realistic is a nice challenge, to paint as close as possible to the reference, but then it's not very creative.... I find it soooo hard to let go, this piece took me ages! I really like how it turned out though, it's different!

Oh wow old wall paper? That's a good idea! May I ask where you used rock salt, is it for texture? It looks great! Happy Halloween!

thank you! Yes, the salt gives the water colour the texture you can see on his dark blue back. It's great fun to play around with it, because you can never predict how the final result will look like

You're welcome! Ah, I thought so! I've heard that salt and rock salt is good for texture. I'll have to try it out sometime! It's always so hard to see in scans, though. D:

I'm not all too crazy about skulls, but your style is just beautiful. I love all the feather details - are you going to be finishing the color on the neck? Also, did you paint/draw the peacock on watercolor paper, cut it out, and apply it to the wallpaper?
Oh, and call me sheltered, but where does one get wallpaper samples?

Heliocyan In reply to JJHOW [2010-10-31 22:55:43 +0000 UTC]
Thank you very much! I'm normally not too keen on skulls either, but I thought I just try something completely different to what I'm normally doing. This bird is actually a variation of him: [link]
Not sure if I finish it, I quite like the rough look about it. I don't want to destroy it by doing to much on it....
The bird itself is painted on water colour paper, and the wall paper is cut out and glued around him.
for those old fashioned looking wallpapers, check interior design companies or decorators! They normally have those large books with wall paper samples to show it to clients, and when the wallpaper companies bring out new collections or colours variations, the old books get thrown away....
