G1 is my favourite version of Soundwave. TFP and Movie incarnations can't surpass the original. I do like TFP Soundwave, but I'm not a fan of Bayformers.

G1 is my favourite by miles.Β  I'm not really a fan of the Bayverse either.

I couldn't agree more. I can't wait for them to stop making those movies. I mean, the robot designs are so bland and ugly. Not to mention there is tasteless humour, too much focus on the humans and too many explosions. In fact, Bayformers are the exact reason why making a live action movie franchise of Transformers wasn't a good idea.

I agree with pretty much all of those points.Β  The movies could've been a lot better if they'd stay a bit more true to TF lore and not just used the franchise name to make random, unrelated action films that just happen to have transforming robots in them.

Yeah, it's ridiculous how Michael Bay and his bad writers are messing up the franchise. They clearly don't care about the franchise; all they care about is making money. Hopefully, one day we'll get a proper live action TF franchise with focus on the Transformers, character development, proper G1-esque designs, coherent plot and something that follows TF lore. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem very likely at the moment and it'll probably be quite a while until the Bayformers are eventually scrapped.Β

Unfortunately I think you're right on all accounts there.

And this is coming from a former fan of Bayformers. I used to like them until I gradually how shallow they were, how poorly done they wereΒ and how much they have messed up the franchise. I actually watched them before G1 and I still like G1 much better. I was never a huge fan of the designs, but now I think that they look pretty horrible compared to any better parts of the franchise (e.g. G1, Prime and TFA). I saw the first three movies several years and have avoided watching the last two like the plague. Have you seen any of the films?

As just action films, they're not too bad. Β But for someone like me, coming from and growing up with the original G1 generation, I'm you can see at least a few reasons why I'd be disappointed with them.

It would have been better if it had at least tried to follow the original concept. That way it would have pleased the fans more. Unfortunately, Michael Bay couldn't care less about the original Transformers.

Great job, reminds me of the old toy artwork. As a kid, I much preferred the simpler cartoon designs but I appreciate the more 'realistic' toy artwork now, although it's difficult to do well in the constraints of a comic story. Will Simpson always went for the toy approach but I don't think it always came off well. Nice inks on Ravage particularly.

Thanks Nick.Β  Yeah, I remember Simpson's toy designs.Β  They're hard to pull off because you can't always give the less articulate toys dramatic action poses.

That's the problem and what looked good on a toy box didn't necessarily work with a less-skilled artist in a comic. I always absolutely LOVED Megatron's pic on his box and also the pic of him fighting Prime in the little catalogue that came with the toys but I never saw any artwork using Megatron's toy design that was anywhere near as good. I always thought it was interesting that the cartoon guys elected to stick closer to the toy designs with Season Two of the cartoon - it meant that the newer characters looked very different from characters who were practically their twins in the toyline e.g. Red Alert/Sideswipe, Hoist/Trailbreaker, the conehead Seekers and the older Seekers. Why did they give Ramjet, Thrust and Dirge coneheads anyway?

hellbat In reply to conradknightsocks [2016-01-12 08:29:08 +0000 UTC]

I always thought that Megatron box art picture was really cool too.Β  The Soundwave one was my favourite though.

Yes I did notice that with the Season 2 cartoon designs.Β  Its probably a good thing they did that as gives the characters a bit more individuality instead of just being identical clones with different paint jobs.

conradknightsocks In reply to hellbat [2016-01-12 09:11:52 +0000 UTC]

That's the Soundwave pic they used for his letters page in the UK comic, right?

I wasn't totally averse to the new designs ... was just annoyed because I was already drawing back then and I anticipated they'd just use recoloured and slightly modified versions of the Season 1 designs. Same thing happened with Transformers The Movie - I'd been colouring Galvatron mainly silver with purple legs for ages in line with the toy and comic, and then they reversed the colour scheme for the movie. Back then, in my eyes, the cartoon could do no wrong and took precedence over the comic versions.

hellbat In reply to conradknightsocks [2016-01-14 09:29:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think it is the same pic they used for the "Soundwaves" page.

Yeah, I can imagine.Β  But the saying that, the artist is always entitled to their own interpretations of the characters.Β  Although, they wouldn't conform to their cartoon versions.

I remember being a bit surprised at Galvatron's colours when I first sawΒ him in his purple scheme.Β  Saying that, I do prefer his Movie colours and even have the purple re-issue toy.

conradknightsocks In reply to hellbat [2016-01-14 09:58:55 +0000 UTC]

Dunno what the story was behind the colour scheme change. There must have been a reason. Maybe the animation team thought mainly purple was more aesthetically-pleasing or that having Galvy mainly grey/silver was too close to Megatron's colour scheme.

hellbat In reply to conradknightsocks [2016-01-16 10:00:07 +0000 UTC]

I'd say it was probably one of those two reasons, if not both.Β  Unless they made the toys based on the cartoon models, which now thinking about it, I think vaguely remember reading something along those lines somewhere.

Very cool lines! I especially like Laserbeak - great perspective on him.
Ravage must always be seen in either this pose or as glowing eyes in a shadow - it's the law!
