I'd already done some flat colours on this, probably well over a year ago, but had forgotten all about it till I came across the file last week. I am a HUGE fan of IDW Comics! The way I see it, when I want a story about my favorite childhood heroes with a new yet nostalgic take & a fulfilling plot that portrays them correctly, I'll stick to IDW Comics. Their Transformers & Godzilla stories are incredible! When a modern theatrical take can't deliver what we the fans want or favors marketability & style over substance & the good morals of the originals, go straight to IDW Comics!

To be honest, I'm a bit more of a Marvel guy, and when it comes IDW's TF continuity, I'm not too impressed. Especially as it started off so well. I really enjoyed their first few stories such as Infiltration and Stormbringer, but I think they took things in the wrong direction, changing the personalities well established characters and making them all a bit psychotic.

A bit psychotic? Well, I get that vibe from Arcee, but it's understandable because she's a Wrecker. And I don't really see that much of a change in their personalities. They're till the characters I know. And for the ones who didn't have much of a personality to begin with, they fleshed them out more. And they've been bringing characters from many different depictions & having them interact in various ways. I really do like how Overlord was presented as a majorly stone-cold bad-ass who could take a harpoon to the eye & still be all like "Come over here and say that!" When I look at IDW Comics' The Transformers, I see the characters I know in a new environment. Their appearance might've changed, but their personalities to me, not too much. Yeah there are guys like Hot Rod who have changed dramatically since the old days. But I kinda like the idea of my favorite Autobot being a little full of himself. I can identify with that on some level. IDW might've made some changes, but at least they didn't butcher the hell out of these characters, throw away everything that was good about them, & staple their names onto a bunch of murderous psychotics & racist stereotypes that just shoot everything, rip each others faces off, & hump legs like Michael Bay did. Worst filmmaker ever. Goddamn pervert trying to use his films to justify all of his effed up fetishes. Romeo & Juliet Laws.... Seriously?

Bay's movies were on a completely different level when it came deformation of characters. But, yeah, Arcee's one of the more extreme examples of what I was referring to in IDW's case. I didn't mind the change of settings/circumstances etc, like I already said, I was enjoying it in the early days of Infiltration, Escalation and what have you. The designs were new and fresh too, but still instantly recognisable but later, they started looking they were straight out of the Bay movies. Having grown up reading the UK comics in particular, changes in personalities to the likes of Skids, Getaway and Ultra Magnus were a bit too much. Also, that's just my own personal opinion.

That's fair. I know what you mean about them changing the designs to look like Bayformers. That was the worst idea ever on Hasbro's part, but due to the outrage of the fans, they fixed that. What we have now in terms of design is something sort of akin to the Aligned continuity, which I also really like. But I understand where you're coming from. It took me time to get used to some of the personality changes they made. Especially to Star Saber. He's 1 of my favorite Japanese series Autobots & here he is now portrayed as a psychotic religious fanatic. Yeah, I didn't like it at first, but at the same time, I liked the idea of an Autobot gone bad. And given that in his original depiction, Star Saber was like this great Knight in Shining Armor, it really shocked me that he was portrayed more as a Knight Templar. And Megatron... Amazing! I mean, they gave me a whole new perspective on the character & made me ask the question, "What was he like before the war?" And to find out that he started out like Martin Luther King, slowly went the rout of Malcom X, then went straight up dictator as the Decepticon cause became so twisted & perverted from what it originally was. A Freedom Fighter turned Tyrant. There's something poetic to it. It reminds me of Anakin Shywalker's transition to the Dark Side & becoming Darth Vader. Speaking of which, I really love how they gave him a chance to redeem himself & dawn the Autobot's shield to try & make right where he went wrong. And it's from his time with the crew of the Lost Light that we learn Megatron isn't all that bad a guy once you get to know him. In fact, he's kinda fun. But agree to disagree. I personally love the Marvel Comics, too. I really hope I can get a hold of the UK Omnibuses someday.

Yeah, actually I should've included Star Sabre in my list of examples as he was another major personality change as far as I'm concerned. I did enjoy the Megatron origin story which I thought was well written. Characters that are just evil for the sake of being evil lack a bit of depth. After all, there's always two sides to every coin. As for him joining the Autobots, I'm a bit apprehensive about it. I'm not up to date with RID and MTMTE at the moment, and I'm just at the point where Shockwaves grand scheme gets foiled and Megatron joins the Lost Light crew. Oh, if you've not read the UK stuff, you really need to get hold of it.
