Description I made 3D clouds from a 2D cloud map in Blender Cycles. After a week of experimenting I have managed to get it. If you look at the edges and near the terminator you can see the clouds are 3D. The shader setup still needs refinement but I am currently doing a second render from in the planet's atmisphere. I ran into a very bad limitation with Blender that will prevent me from taking this project to its full potential. You cannot have more than 3 volume objects nested inside of a 4th and have light rays pass all the way through. I have tried raising the max steps to as high as 10,000 and decreasing the step size to as small as 0.01. This means I cannot have more than 2 cloud layers inside a volumetric atmosphere.

I used the Sky Texture and a Quadratic Sphere for the atmosphere and I was able to get the texture to map outward from the center by using setting a Vector Transform Node to Object-Object.

Well I'd say the test was a resounding success!

Beautiful.
