I'd like to! Are you self-taught or did you learn from someone else? And how expensive is the equipment usually?

I only learned from the net
That is like asking how expensive is a car? You can buy a car for 300 euro and also for 300.000.Β
I am at the low end unfortunately.

That is a very interesting blade. What would the cost be for one of these?

hellize In reply to JohnScatha [2014-09-28 19:55:02 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, one similar would be 300 euro.
It is around 38-40 cm in total. its layer count could go up to 480

I'm seeing that you really like using 5160 in your forging, and I absolutely love that.Β

Yes, it's a good material. Relatively easy to forge, easy to forge weld and it hardens well

What kind of forge do you like to use?

hellize In reply to rhoark [2014-01-13 15:52:56 +0000 UTC]

I use a simple forge with charcoal

I've seen more better quality blades come from coal than anything else. Β I like the oldfashioness of it. Β

hellize In reply to rhoark [2014-01-14 07:31:20 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, steel can pick up some extra carbon from the charcoal. Other forger just burn out of it, that's the reason

SWindhagen In reply to hellize [2017-06-10 20:19:29 +0000 UTC]

Hi.
Steel can pick up extra carbon from the charcoal, but unfortunatly only if you set the steel in an area of the fire where it gets very very little oxigen and stays on 850 -930Β°C for a cupple of houres (and it will only affekt the outer layers). In every other case the fire will burn away some carbon from the boundary layer of the steel. That is the reason why we all have to trouble to forge the piece in as little heating-cycles as possible and always have to grind away the boundary layer (0,5 - 1mm depanding on fire an number of heatings), if we want to create a blade whith a realy good edge. In a gas forge it is possible to adjust the flame so that it consumes the oxigen inside the forge. In that case there is no carbon burn-up (or burn-up of other alloy elements), but a flame like this has a low temperature, so it is seldom used.

Sorry for my bad english. I hope you can understand what I mean and it is of help to you.

Greetings from germany.
Sebastian.

Thanks for the extra details, but I am pretty sure it was in vain, no one will read this except me Case hardening in weldshut containers filled willed with charcoal dust and a piece of low quality steel, is not a very popular hobby these days

rhoark In reply to hellize [2014-01-14 16:03:57 +0000 UTC]

Really, I didn't know that. Β I always thought that was because of things like uneven heat distributions. Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hellize In reply to rhoark [2014-01-14 16:33:59 +0000 UTC]

But it's true Charcoal has lots of free carbon, which the steel can pick up.

A gas forge on the other hand, has none Β

I'm usually on edge when dealing with gas fires anyway. Β

Do you have your own workshop?

It's a little exaggerated to call it a workshop, but I think yes, I have a small hut where I work.
