Description
Done for Wendy Seller's 2D foundation class (RISD). Black and white gouache on watercolor paper. And yes, this was painted from observation, not from a photograph. A big thanks to the RISD nature lab for letting me slave over this fetus for a few days.

I work in a college in Brooklyn. Been there 20 years.
I work in the biology dept. there and in exp 14 of the course I am assigned to set up and take down labs of (general biology for non-science students),the set up includes fetuses in jars. If I am to take the waggon into the hall, I drape a large towel over it to avoid -comments.
Once I had been wheeling said towel-covered waggon to the lab, when a mother with a small child passed by. At that point, I felt fully justified in the way I do things ...

Aw! I too have an (alien) fetus in a jar. His name is Albert.
What's this one called?

Well, seeing as this one's a real fetus, it might be a little weird to name him. If he ever had one, nobody at the lab knows what it is. He must have been stillborn (probably premature) so I'm sure he wasn't named. I don't know if we can give him a name over 50 years after he was born/died (he's a very old specimen).

None the less he is very cute, according to your drawing at least.
Your art makes me pine for strange things in jars.

I'm flattered by your interest in the piece, but unfortunately this one's not for sale. It's on loan to a family member at the moment, and if/when it returns I'll be keeping it. Thank you, though!

I'm a student at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and we have a Nature Lab full of animal specimens (along with some live animals) that we use for artistic reference and study. This fetus is actually from the 20's or 30's, it's been in the collection a long time, and I took it out for a day to paint it.
When I painted this, I was a freshman and just an admirer of the lab, but now I actually work there and I've taken over the job of managing our "curio cabinet" in which this and other jar specimens are kept. I'm also identifying and adding to the collection. It's the best job I've ever had---I also get to take care of and play with the live animals.

Hi There!
You have just earned yourself a feature!
My features are to honor the sometimes overlooked artists of dA that I personally think deserve some exposure (and ALSO, to show off people who I think are undeniably talented in their own genre of art, REGARDLESS of their #'s of fav's or pageviews. I like what I like and sometimes artwork isn't featured in the regular DDs because it's popular all on it's own It's a shame, but the admins are only trying to be fair! ). Please click the link below to see your work featured and to view other featured artists . If you prefer not to be a featured artist, just send me a note and I will remove you from the list. Cheers!

Very good attention to detail, I love your use of highlights. I like the composition a lot too, I wouldn't expect the fetus facing out of the page to work, but it is pulled together well.

You have an incredible eye for detail and tone... how did painting that affect you emotionally? It's a pretty heavy subject matter

Thank you. Maybe I'm a bit detached, but it didn't really have an emotional effect on me other than awe at being able to work with a real fetus. The baby was probably premature and stillborn, and donated to science, so as long as it's respected I don't have a problem with it. I had the opportunity to dissect a cadaver at a local hospital, and while some of my fellow students didn't feel comfortable working with a human body, I found the experience to be beautiful and inspiring.

Well your beautiful mind reflects on your work ... I think you'd enjoy the movie 'kissed', google it or something.. not many people appreciate it, but my instincts tell me you will lol ... I'm getting good at being creepy?

Pretty cool, eh? Our nature lab is excellent. In addition to this human fetus, there're about 30 other kinds of fetus in jars in a big cabinet. Maybe I'll go after some more of them.
