It's actually missing a lot from the 3 design, I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be 2.

yes but if i remember,3 made them point forward instead of to the sides

tough in the end, 3 was about minor cosmetic changes

MML1 also had them forward sometimes. They aren't totally consistant with the design in certain places.
