Description
More a Matt Jefferies meets Forbidden Planet. One of Matt Jefferies first concepts for Star Trek was a saucer shaped ship that held a crew of around 200 people. Gene Roddenberry did not want a spaceship with fins, exhaust or look anything like the standard of the time.Jefferies original was a more tapered saucer and mine is symmetrical. Other than that, this is what Trek 'could' have looked like.

Nice,
I just designed a C-57D for 3D printing on Thingiverse and am almost done with a C-58B model, I wanted to create a bit of an extended universe and was also thinking of a C-48 but I guess you beat me to it.

Hmm, interesting thing. Especially the mushroom tower look.

I wish there were more people attempting to make such an important, but forgotten design.

Thanks (and sorry took so long to say).
There is so much Jefferies material out there and I have seen a few designs get a real professional treatment. Β Too many folks have such amazing imaginations so I understand when you don't see 'classic' work get a present day update.

I still think it's a cool retro ship you've come up with

Very nicely done, indeed. I've been looking over all the Jeffries concept art for TOS. Not just his ships, but the sets and character designs he did. He was a genius.

Lovely rendition. I've never seen Jeffries' original versions of the Enterprise, except for the one this is based on, but I cannot imagine they are anywhere near as cool and iconic as the design they finally went with. I remember seeing a set of plans on sale advertised in comic books of Jeffries' original designs, but I never got them. I did, however, spend many hours poring over Franz Josef's Enterprise blueprints.
And as far as "Forbidden Planet" goes... you can't help but watch that classic without thinking that's it's basically an episode of Star Trek, before Star Trek was conceived. No matter, all art is built on what came before. Without "Forbidden Planet", maybe Star Trek would have never come to be.

No feathers meant to be ruffled but Star Trek owes more to Forbidden Planet than will ever be 'officially' acknowledged.

That is awesome!!! I have often looked at those early "Enterprise" designs, and thought "what if?" I am a huge fan of Forbidden Planet and 1950s sci-fi. I had hoped back in the day when Star Trek: Enterprise was announced that they would have used all of the early discarded ideas for the Original Series as the basis for Archer and crew. Oh, well. Keep up the great work!

Very cool and a nice design. Cool homage to several sources With Roddenberry's restrictions on the Enterprise and Starfleet this could be considered perhaps a civilian ship... a freighter or liner. Perhaps even a local police ship... given the size like a mobile police precinct. Going that way you could consider the ships designation as a non-military one... the NCC on the Federation ships was for "Naval Construction Code" so the C in C-48B could be "Civilian". Just a nerdy rationalization thought. Ignore as you will
Regardless, your work on it is great and thanks for sharing

Great job. I've liked this design since I first saw it years ago.
I've always wondered what it would look like in an encounter with the Enterprise.

Mtanding is there were at least 17 variations on the theme, before Jeffries came up with something Roddenberry liked.
I'm glad they didn't do another "flying saucer" like the Jupiter2, or the C57D.
The classic Enterprise is an iconic work of art.
What you've got here, could be a support ship or perhaps the moon shuttle Dr. McCoy mentioned.

I agree. A saucer would have been too easy and cliche.

And Gene said it was not based on Forbidden Planet...
Excellent render sir!

Did he? That's shocking. I've seen in interviews with cast members and some of the writers at the time that Gene was very much inspired by FP. Essentially wanting to do FP as a TV show was part of the paradigm of influence he had in mind.

I suppose one theatre was that but I have read (somewhere) that comparisons were made and he refuted them.
Then again he claimed to have designed EVERYTHING on Star Trek - when we all know Matt Jeffries was the chief designer.
