Rachel discovered the GKND soon after Nigel joined it, that's why she retired early.

Yeah, and I think with the emotional turmoil she was probably experiencing, she'd have a good reason to retire. Plus, I have an idea of just what she must have been feeling at the time:
Regret- for not having told Nigel beforehand how she felt about him.
Guilt- for suspending Nigel from the Delightful Children's cake retrieval mission, and since that was likely their last interaction together (she's not seen again after that), she probably felt that the whole thing was her fault.
And since she no longer had Nigel's support, Rachel decided for good that she couldn't handle the pressure anymore.
