Thank you, Caroline! Yes, the eyes - if you don’t have the eyes, you ain’t got nothing..
If I ever were to make a textbook on painting portraits ( highly unlikely) , that would be a suitable title..🤓

Yes, the light..suppose thats a main priority for most painters..I’m increasingly aware of the light when choosing my objects - much more fun to paint when the lighting is Interesting..And Thanks!

We both are obsessed by the light...For me, esp. on the human skin and water.. Have you uncovered the mystery of the "glaze"? Is there a special Danish light, as we have in the Loire valley, or in Provence?

Not quite sure what you mean by the mystery of the glace - but yes, we do talk about the “ Nordic light” and more locally of “ the light of Skagen”. Skagen is the most northern part of Jutland, and was in the beginning of the 20th century the hometown of a renovned group of painters, of which P.S.Krøyer is the best known..
He was extremely virtuoso and a true master of light..You ought to look him up - Think you’d appreciate his work..

I wrote "glaze" for the french "glacis" , this process which renders the light ,by transparence, on the canvas. A difficult technique...
I am sure that the northern" light is the best to paint! I admire the works of the "Painter of the Marine" , Marin Marie, who spent his life beyond the North Atlantic and Baltic Sea.
I'll look for P.S.Kroyer!

Than you, Walter.. I wonder, since you refer to the previous discussion concerning “presence” in a portrait, what you consider of importance when you begin a new portrait? Whats your aim? I’m only asking, because I consider you one of the portrait experts on these pages..
regards Henrik

Oh my! You make me blush
I prefer to use visual language... My explanations are not that "expert", you know
When I start a painting, the most important work has allready been done : Being infected by the contagious magic that radiates from the model, the idea, the composition. It enduces a resolute work fever.
It is a question of obsessional enthusiasm. But I still don't use any planning...
I think it is not much different than your work process, maybe you use more planning ?

Thank you, Walter, for an interesting answer! I suppose there are similarities: It’s mandatory for me that the motif has something that captivates you as viewer - could be Interesting lighting, a special mood or perhaps Interesting colors..In this particulary painting I liked the ubiqous facial expression - can’t really tell whether she’s thoughtfull, relaxed or perhaps even a bit annoyed? (I know, of course, since I Took the photo!🤓)
Anyway, doing Watercolor, I still have to do some planning, as one usually have to paint from light values to darker ones..Also, I tend to work from a rather precise sketch before filling in the values..Especially the latter diminuish the risk of things going haywire..

Henrik... this is a great start in 2019.... really well done in all aspects!
- great skintones
- convincing anatomy
- beautiful light / values
- nice calm background complementary to the reddish skintones
- very unconventional composition... I like the way her view leads out of the paper
This i stunning Henrik... keep up with your amazing portraitworks.
Did you paint her from life?... the portrait is so enormously vivid!!
However... all the best for the coming year... I am looking forward to see all your artwork here
cheers
// Dominik

Hi Dominik, and a happy newyear to you!
No, I didn’t paint her from life - from own photo..Anyway, she’s a very active woman, and I don’t think I would get her to pose more than, say, 30 sec’s, and I’m not that fast..
But I’m glad that you like it - I think the goal with a portrait must be to convey the wiever with a sensation of presence of the portrayed..So, even though I still don’t have a clue, Think that’s what I’m striving for..Also, the devil seems to be in the detail: very subtle changes in the shading or proportions can change everything..
It’s really funny, though, never thought I’d be so facinated by this, but it is rewarding when you suddenly get to a point where you sort of “nails it”..
