A gentle breeze blew in through the open window of Ruby’s hotel room - she was sitting at a small wooden table nearby, holding a piece of paper in her hands. She had yet to find a place in the Issho region to really settle down, everytime she thought she was in a good spot a new adventure took her elsewhere.

This is a different type of adventure

She thought leaning back in her chair, and looking out of the window. Spring had just arrived and with it came grass and bug Pokemon awakening, flowers blooming and, most interestingly, the announcement that a contest would be held in the region. Papers were sent out and posters had been plastered up in multiple public areas. This was a big deal for the region but contest coordinators were... bright, flashy and full of confidence. Ruby….wasn’t.

“Why do I do this to myself?” She asked aloud leaning heavily on her elbow.

The themes for the contest were just so alien to her - she rarely spent her time outdoors before coming here. When she was young She had no friends she had gone on picnics with or had any wonderful experiences she could really pull from. She had spent her youth playing with the Pokemon from the abandoned mansion and her adolescence studying to try and get into the pokemon nursing academy. She pulled out her cell phone and began scrolling through the Pokemon available in her box - for a spring theme a grass Pokemon would be the most ideal and she had plenty to choose from. Most of them though were not at all interested when Ruby had shown them the footage of one earlier. The only one that seemed even slightly captivated was…

“Maybe”

She mumbled pausing over her Whimsicott’s image. Poof had taken control of the tv and remote soon after the other Pokemon lost interest, but she was not an ideal candidate for a stage show. She clung to Ruby when out in the open and seemed to almost always be crying. She gingerly removed the small Pokemons ball from her bag nearby and released her onto the table with a bright flash of light. The small brown Pokemon shook its head back and forth as if shaking off a nap and looked up at Ruby from her seat on the small table. Tears almost immediately appeared just at the corners of her eyes as they darted around searching the room nervously.

“It’s ok it’s just the two of us right now”

She said gently patting the fluff on Poof’s head, she held up the contest paper so the Pokemon could see it.

“What do you think? I noticed you were interested”

Poof took the paper in her paws and stared at the colourful graphics of Pokemon and coordinators dressed up in outlandish outfits.

“I don’t want to push you, but would you like to be my partner?” Ruby continued. Poof looked between the paper and her trainer pulling it close to the puff on her chest as if she was hugging it and she gave Ruby a determined - though teary - nod.

“Alright - we better get planning then” She responded with a gentle smile.

--

This was it, they were behind the curtain of the first contest event. They had practiced the moves to use in tandem for weeks prior to the beginning of the event. Poof’s confidence had not exactly grown but she seemed to be able to perform their planned routine with more success than ever. They were as ready as they were going to get.

“How are you doing?” Ruby asked, kneeling beside her small grass Pokemon - a blue bow now affixed to her head. Ruby had given her one of her own to wear especially for this event. It matched the one she was wearing in her own hair - they had tested out a couple contest outfits but this one was the most simple and comfortable for Poof.

“...cott” She responded bringing her paws up close to her face as always tears were near the edges of her eyes. It wasn’t a no - but it wasn’t a yes either.

“We’re going to be ok I promise - even if we don’t win” She replied gently petting Poof’s head ensuring she didn’t mess up the placement of the bow,

They had planned for Poof to use grassy terrain to give the environment the feeling of being outside, a TM Ruby had purchased specially for the event. Then she would release some flower petals from the picnic basket she had brought with her and Poof’s tailwind would blow them out into the audience. The aim was to liken the performance to the moment in Spring when cherry blossom trees are just starting to lose their petals.

“What’s important is that we try our best - there will always be another contest” She continued. Poof nodded as if she understood - but those tears never left her eyes. Ruby wasn’t sure they ever would, she would need to really work in order to build Poof’s confidence for the future.

They both turned their heads as they heard cheers erupt from behind the curtain. The last coordinator had just finished their routine and they were the next to go out on stage. Ruby stood up and Poof lightly clung to her leg/

“Hey - I’ll be there the entire time. I promise” She said with a smile and the small Pokemon nodded, releasing her hold on her trainer’s leg she stepped forward. It was integral that Poof went out first in order to set up the terrain or the effect would not have the same impact. As if someone knew they were finally ready, the curtains opened revealing a full house.

“Time to do this” Ruby said watching Poof take a deep breath and then step out into the spotlight. Despite her fear it was almost like she belonged out there and one day, maybe, she could do it without any tears in her eyes.
