Well I finally watched it, another charming Disney show. The animation in this show is AMAZING! The characters are so well animated and lively and the backgrounds have a good usage of color saturation. Those features shine in the episodes that are important to the ongoing story, not so much for the filler. The 4 central characters are all extremely likeable. Anne is an amazing protagonist that have a lot of fun traits, she’s self-assured, cheerful and has confidence in all her friends (or used to be friends… sorry for jumping ahead but I’m referring to a later season 2 episode). Sprig is Anne’s supporting best friend, he’s a goofball but also very skeptical. Polly is the younger sister, she’s the “worst” out of the four characters but that doesn’t mean much since they’re all great. Polly is a cool mischievous child but she just doesn’t have many personalities as the rest, she’s just a reasonable plot device in various episodes. Hop Pop is the grandfather and he’s the funniest person on here hands down. He’s packed with old age jokes which I’m a fan of these sort of jokes, but even aside from him being the perfect comic relief character, he’s a nice parental figure to the kids. The rest of side characters are pretty alright, some are more forgettable than others but I can point at ones that I do like.

Season 1 was full of "filler" episodes, as in stories that aren't super important to the show's lore. For people that want to watch the very important ones they would only need to watch like 5 or 6 episodes. But honestly I don't mind the first season being simple and not completely serialized. After all, this is the first season and they need to get us used to its universe and give us a reason to care about these characters and their situations. So, this season sets up Anne's character arc and with the town starting to respect her presence. Of course most of the meat in this season are the episodes that focus on the more important arc of the show, but the regular episodes are still very good. This is a GREAT first season, I admire this season for letting us get attached to its natural environment and characters, provided by good humor. I see lots of potential for the 2nd season and I'll be looking forward to watching it when it's finished.

Season 2 update: Watching Season 2 was such a delight, because it was doing everything I was hoping for. A stronger narrative (and more story based episodes in general), new characters, and more character development. They did all of that and it made me beyond satisfied. The adventure in this season is so great, the first 10 episodes are them travelling to Newtopia for new answers, new solutions, new everything. Anne eventually finds Marcy and thank god she doesn’t betray her because Marcy is EPIC. After that it's just an adventure after venture after venture, man those temple episodes and season finale were just outstanding. Remember earlier where I praised the characters? Yeah well somehow they are like four times better in this season, so many scenes involving the characters thinking about what their future lies ahead and who they should trust is just so aaaaahhhhhh so good. The new characters here are good too, even the one offs have something that I can remember them by… the Kermit and Grunkle Stan lookalikes are my favorites from the bunch lol. Season 2 is AMAZING, the storytelling is just so good here and I can’t wait to see what lies ahead in season 3 like oh my god I need it now.

Season 3 update: This is the final season and boy you can tell. This season was very fun to watch when it was airing. For the first time in the show we stay on Earth for a good bit. Half of this season is at Anne's home planet, and finding new friends along the way to help them beat this final epic battle. In the 2nd half we go back to Amphibia and recruit everyone. From this point on, every individual episode serves a purpose building onto the climax, and the final three episodes are the show's endgame. DAMN what a season! The only recurring con I have with it is that I feel like they dumb down Hop Pop in the human world. I know he would be a lot more clumsy and clueless in this new environment for him, but he's just as mischief as Sprig and Polly now. I liked him more in the first 2 seasons when he was more known as this kooty old guy but is meaningful. Although later on they do address this briefly. Anyway enough of that, this season hits you in the feels. Season 2 started doing this and season 3 just continued it did it in its special episodes. Mostly because we learn even more about the characters and their personal struggles, a lot of these episodes can be emotional. The finale is perfect, I had many crazy theories on what would happen to the girls and their friends but now the show has finally ended, I could not have asked for a more satisfying ending to these characters. This show has very good lore, I did not consider how good it was until the show was wrapping up. Most of the "filler" episodes serve a purpose and make a comeback to a later episode. Because of this, I am more excited for the Marcy's Journal book that will come out later this year to see if there's more useful information. Season 3 is a strong GREAT season. I am so sad that the show is gone now, but it was a fun journey.

Overall this show is GREAT. If you aren't a fan of the first season I still highly recommend seasons 2 and 3 because of the stronger narrative. The stories are so gripping to watch, and that's what the show's purpose is... keeping you on the edge of your seat and that worked very well. The finale did not disappoint, gave a beautiful closure to the girls.
