Description
Here's a different take on Captain Atom I put together for writer at DC2. Don't know if he'll use it but it was fun to do.This look combines elements from the second version of the character by Steve Ditko, the 80s cosmic surfer look, and the animated design by Bruce Timm. All of that with a little atomic retro thrown in.

Β Out of curiosity, may I please ask if you have ever been called upon to design a take on the World they used to call Earth-4? (the world where old Charlton Comics characters and associates take pride of place).

I've done two Capt. Atom variant pics, but not really ever tackled the whole Charlton cast. Might be fun to try some day. I'm definitely looking forward to what Grant Morrison comes up with for them in the upcoming Multiversity.

Β I agree; I myself am looking forward to seeing what Mr Morrison can make of the DC Multiverse (although I do have reservations about his decision to drink so deeply from the WATCHMEN well - I'd honestly be more interested in seeing some kind soul borrow more inspiration from Mr Moore's SUPREME than from his Magnum Opus, simply because it would rather defy expectations).
Β I suppose that the problem when using the Charlton Characters is that so little has been done with them, relatively speaking, which leaves artists and writers with less continuity from which to draw inspiration!

Β If you don't mind borrowing inspiration then I heartily suggest looking through this Timeline (which if nothing else offers a high number of names worth researching!).

Here's hoping Morrison goes a little more inspirational with his take. The gritty realism thing has been done to death. I'm guessing we've already seen a peek with his Captain Adam from Infinite Crisis. And we've seen a slightly Rorschached version of the Question on Justice League Unlimited and I loved that version. Guess we'll see.
I think the Charlton characters were shoehorned into the DCU and then largely overshadowed. I remember always thinking they were unusual and cool when I'd find the odd issue as a kid. Especially E-man!
I was hoping they might splinter off again in the New 52 reboot, but oh we'll. I'll definitely check out that link. Thanks!

Β Thank You for your courtesy and patience! - I do hope and trust that the Five Earths project will give you as much food for thought as it has given me (I can also recommend 'Comic Vine' and 'Public Domain Superheroes' if you're looking for information on some of the obscure characters mentioned in the Earth-4 Timeline).
Β I will close by admitting that The Question (as portrayed in 'Justice League Unlimited') is a very fair example of the sort of approach that I'd like to see taken with The Charlton Champions:- Yes, WATCHMEN is a useful influence but it should be incorporated as one of many and in such a way that the result transcends mere pastiche (ideally, although I must grant that this is likely to be more tricky than it sounds).
Β I've actually tried to work out such a setting myself (for a shared Universe on the 'Atomic Think Tank'), but found it veering away from Charlton when I tried to work out what a World best described as 'WATCHMEN Vs WANTED' would look like and came up with answers that I'd like to consider reasonably interesting (although I fear that they remain incomplete as yet - since when it comes to typing, for me it's either ebb or flood tide!).Β

Β Mister Herren, I wished to compliment you upon your distinctive and charming art style, but could not pick out a single piece in particular at short notice to compliment; I therefore took the liberty of choosing to pronounce my admiration under the image that led me into your art gallery in the first place!

Thanks.
Glad you said that because I was hoping for a retro futuristic but was worried it might not seem contemporary enough.
