Like Hiroshima a crime of war committed by the 'victors' of WW2. Hamburg, Cologne and Dresden were absolutly unnecessary as the German forces had already largely collapsed and high command was effectively gone or disrupted. Churchill used this as a cold-blooded revenge for the London Blitz. 'Bomber Harris' is not a 'hero of war' but the same as the men amongst the Nazis that killed civillians on the Eastern Front.

Nice work!

I know. Maybe making them paying money for reparations (?) would've been enough. But bombs!   Oh, no, no, no! As a matter of fact, I agree with you. The bombing of Dresden was savage ... discarding the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, however.

"Maybe making them paying money for reparations"

It had already been tried after WW1. It didn't work quite as expected. :-S

" The bombing of Dresden was savage"

Pretty much as the bombings of London, Liverpool, Glasgow, and any other city in Europe I forgot to mention.

Bombing of Dresden didn't resolve anything. It was meaningless. More of it. It was showoff to USSR. Just as Hiroshima & Nagasaki were US showoff to USSR.

Soviets requested Dresden attack though, it was apparently to loosen the pressure on their fronts..

Aeteni In reply to Warsie [2016-04-16 07:21:45 +0000 UTC]

Did soviets demanded the level of attack? And did soviets have to do all the work? You know that there is saying "if you tell the fool to pray, he'll break his foehead (from slamming it into the floor, if you wonder)".

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Warsie In reply to Aeteni [2016-04-17 02:41:58 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure about the level, but it was i think something like 'relieve pressure on x position of the front for me' as opposed to 'level this city to the ground'. Though given the nature of the Axis-Soviet War, I suspect the Soviet government and population wasn't feeling humanitarian towards Germany anyway (note all the sunken German passenger ships in the Baltic Sea)

the town I was born and grew up was half burned during WWII. I actually understand why it was bombed. A seaport makes a stategical target. Bombing for spreading terror is sick. Oh, actually UK had practice that before.

I know, I know. I'm not saying nor of the sides did correctly.  But I guess that's war: one bombs you, then you bomb him... I don't like wars.  Being interested in a war, doesn't mean you like it.

IN NONE of my comments I try to defend the Nazis, is that clear? I've ALWAYS supported the Allies. And I guess you're right: the Nazis (don't say the Germans, because NOT all Germans at the time were Nazis) bombed many more cities in England (+ others. I'm saying England because it was the RAF and the US Air Force to bomb Dresden), not only one. I suppose England did that to Germany so he would know what it felt like to have your cities bombed.

:   I'M NOT SAYING NONE OF THE THINGS WERE CORRECT AND GOOD. WARS = BAD. PEOPLE DIE, DAMN. CITIES ARE DESTROYED.

Ps. Sorry for the frustration.  I'm not usually like that. (Like many students in my high school, I like smiling.

district87 In reply to blackbloodybunny [2014-08-22 00:56:04 +0000 UTC]

It may have been a bad thing, but it saved millions upon millions more lives. If the USA had invaded Japan, then the casualties on both sides would have been horrible, worse than the atomic bombings, and Japan probably would be divided up by the Americans and Soviets. Communist in the North, Capitalist in the South, much like Korea today. And who knows, if that did go down, there might not have been a Hetalia!

Sorry 'bout the rant.

Aeteni In reply to district87 [2015-11-19 19:37:10 +0000 UTC]

It wasn't. Japan was cornered, it's allies were defeated. US tested nucliar weapon and then blatantly gathered data on prosess. Oh, yeah, in fear of Soviets Japan hasn'r signed treaty like up today. That's a grat thing for Japan to have unsolved issues. Oh, yeah! It's really good for Japan to be occupied by US. How many military bases does US have in Japan?

I remember hearing a story...I think it was related to this. There was a man who, after taking a part in the bombing, had to go and down to the land that was just destroyed. I can't remember exactly what I was told that he saw, but it was something involving people- women and children even- being burned into the ground. After that, the man didn't speak a word for four whole months.

Just looking at this brings tears to my eyes. War is such a horrible, horrible thing.

Hearing about this always makes me sad. Just because the German army and government was at war, doesn't mean all these innocent civilians had to die. I don't know enough about the event yet to make any sort of judgment call on the Allies, but I still think it shouldn't have had to happen.

Arminius1871 In reply to Obiwanlives4ever [2012-03-05 16:18:01 +0000 UTC]

I´d say it was a crime. The bombing of Dresden was a few weeks before the end of the war, the Russians weren´t far away and it had no sense to kill in one night more women and children, than in the whole war were killed in England. And this was only 1 of hundreds of german cities, that were bombed down.

But Churchill said clearly why he wants to do that:

I don´t want to destroy any industrial-regions in Dresden, I want to burn the refugees from Breslau. And the fire-bombs hit the train-station in Dresden, where thousands of innocent people escaping from the murdering Russians in the east.

This was not necessary and a big crime to destroy one of the most beautiful german cities.
