Description (Uh. Not sure if this is the right category. )

Custom dye, cut, and curl. This wig is made of two wigs, a straight yellow one and a straight pink one. Dyed separately, sewn together, and then final styling.

Base wigs were from Epic Cosplay wigs~ CRAZY HEAT RESISTANT...I swear, these wigs did NOT want to curl O_o I almost took a heat gun to it...

Based on one of the SakuraCon mascots~

This is amazing. How did you sew the wigs together, if you don't mind me asking?

The result is amazing. What did you use for dying ? I want to do a gradient color on a wig but I have no idea x_x Here is the reference picture : [link]

Thanks !

I hand-dye all my wigs using spray-alcohol method (ink mixed with alcohol, applied via spraying). I feel this gives it a more natural look and I have more control over gradients.

You could easily achieve your wig gradient by starting with a pink base and coloring it with purple/blue! I would start off with blue to create the first color gradient (do a couple washes), then go in again lower with the purple. Be sure to let it dry between washes and to rinse off the wig - you have to make sure the dye actually holds (or else it'll rub off all over your clothes/skin, and that will be sad!).

It takes a long time, so give yourself a few days and good ventilated space. Also wear gloves and/or prepare to have your hands be stained a strange color for a week...haha...OTL

Oh thank you so much for advices ! Is the wig washable after all this treatment ? Once it's dry ?

You have to wash it repeatedly to get the excess dye out - like I said, you should let it dry and rinse it between each wash of color. So, yes, the wig is still washable. If you're asking if the color itself is washable - no. The only way you can un-dye the wig is by "washing" it in a higher alcohol solution than what you dyed with. (For instance, if your dye was created with 91% alcohol, you have to use 97% alcohol to get rid of dye.)

I see ! Thanks so much !

I was looking yesterday for the tools..

Could I use any 70% alcohol to dye the wig or a special one ? (Ethyl-alcohol, Isopropanol etc ?..)Another degree ? Where could I find it in big quantity ? Do I need a special authorization ?

Sorry for so much question haha x)

Thanks !p

I don't think 70% is going to be potent enough, but you can try it. I'm sure you can find up to 91% in any store, like Walgreens. I think you want to do at least 85%. I don't think you need special authorization, although 97% alcohol is typically only sold at special stores (off-hand I only know of professional special FX makeup stores that sell that percentage). It's rubbing alcohol, so the CLEAR (non-colored) alcohol is the right one (sorry, I've forgotten its scientific name).

np, good luck! Remember you can always un-dye it (with clear washes of higher percentage alcohol), so don't freak out if it isn't quite right the first time!

Now if I wanted to dye one wig three colors (light blue to dark blue to purple) , instead of two wigs to two colors like you did, do you think it'd work?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

heulangel In reply to Silver-IIXVII [2012-08-04 06:32:08 +0000 UTC]

Yes, since you can use the light blue as the base of all those colors. (whereas, for this particular wig, there's no one color that could serve as the base color of all of them)
