Description This is a gray wolf by the name of Maiken. She arrived at JCW with another wolf cub his age, but Maiken was pretty much terrified of anything that moved, include me, to my dismay. She just sat in a corner all day, shaking and made no progress with people. So the staff at JCW put him in with two adult wolves, one male and one female and they hit it off. Now, Maiken is completely different.! She gets along great with the pack and isn't too afraid of people anymore. It is really heartwarming.

This shot was taken from a ridiculous distance so I am surprised it turned out. The shadow effect occurred with the sunset, but I accentuated it in Photoshop.

I guess I could say that this one is for all the wolf fans who watch me - I admit that my gallery's selection of quality wolf photos is quite poor. Moreover, the quantity isn't something to write home about either. It certainly doesn't reflect how much I like them. They are my second favorite animal, after all.

ooo, so beautiful. wolves are amazing; solitary and they look very intelligent. i like the dark/light sides and the story is perfect. makes me wish i had heard it when i was little.

Great shot.
Wolves are inspiring animals, what a cool opportunity you have to work with them..
I have a bad feeling that centers like yours are going to be more and more necessary in the near future with the way current attitudes are out here in the west towards the animal.

x Okay so you know how I worked at the animal shelter training dogs right. Well these people brought back their dog that they adopted there as a puppy because he got too big - and he was HUGE, literally he was bigger than my Great Dane. His name was, of all things, "Scooby Doo," and he was gorgeous - jet black with longish hair, and reaaally friendly and playful. I walked him alone in the woods just like any other dog every day and he always jumped on my back and what not.

Then one day a younger volunteer had him outside in one of the pens, and a squirrel was on the other side of the fence. And I see this dog go over and crouch down, and start stalking it. And my face was literally like. O.O. Dogs do not do this. Ever. Wolves do.

So I told Sharon the director lady and she got this guy on the phone who operates a wolf sanctuary and he came right away to take a look. Turns out Scooby Doo was a full fledged wolf - and now he's living as a wolf with other wolves at that guy's place.

AND I WAS ALONE IN THE WOODS WITH HIM. ON MY BACK.

Scary. But he was really nice.

Hehe yeah! I do feel really lucky to have known him though. He was so beautiful.

Our zoo has an awesome wolf thing outside, but it's too awesome - they NEVER come out to the front glass. It's tinted so all they see is a mirror, but they can still hear - and kids are always screaming and loud. Only twice have I ever seen one close up. On a school field trip the largest female came face to face with me without realizing it, and about 3 years ago, everyone ganged up on the smallest female and bullied her, so she hung close to the glass and I got a lot of pictures of the poor thing.

Awww...I knew a wolf like that. I spent time with her and tried to cheer her up...she went to a different pack, but the one's that bullied her don't like me . Likely since they associate me with her...or because I'm a man.

The portrait is amazing, and the tale of light and shadow selves goes so well with the strong light effect on your model.

Yay wolfy :3
I've heard that Cherokee story many times and I've love hearing it, it's just so true and I love the way the grandfather explains it to his grandson.

Very awesome photo! The shadow on half of the wolf's face is a very nice contrast to the side being hit by the sunlight, it looks like two different wolves =]
And a very good shot considering with how far away you must have been. I'm happy Mayken go over his fears btw =]

The story sticks with me and I often try to think about my behavior in how it would relate to the story...though I could easily interpret it as "two tigers" as well... =3

Thanks for the comment!

Ahh!! ← my attempt at expressing an excited squeal through onomatopoeia. I love wolves!! The eyes look so amazingly beautiful; you captured them very well. I like the story too. By the way, you have an amazing memory. I can barely remember the name of my favourite character of my favourite book. Heh.. getting off topic.
I love the way the shadow splits the wolf in two, one that's dark and one that's light. Great job, considering whatever distance may have between you and the [moving?] subject.

He stood still for a moment, but had the camera held out at arms length trying desperately to keep it still. Considering the circumstances, I cannot believe it turned out. I was saved by the high-shutter speed.

I am glad you like it! Though I am really a tiger person, I really love wolves too.

Great photograph!
It looks a bit noisy though...
It also looks like you tried to dodge his eyes...maybe you should lighten the picture as light as the eyes? It just stands out to me.

I love it's expression.
A truly beautiful animal, you've captured it well!
