Description D'aaaawwww. Been wanting to draw something like this for awhile. Today's theme sorta gave me an excuse, so here's a picture of Rainbow Dash and Tank napping in a tree.

Oh zoomed in realistic looking trees, how I struggle with you sometimes.
Oh, and you pesky leaves, why do you not work as well as I'd like?
Oh Mountain, you my friend. I like doing you... wait, that sounds slightly awkward.

wow. This is adorable! And a really nice drawing all in all. What did you use here? Are those water colors, computer coloring or pencils? ^^

Tl; dr
Pencil sketch, then painted over digitally using a multiply layer.

---

Originally it's a pencil sketch, which I then scan.

I then do basic black line art, in a normal layer above the pencil sketch, over key areas or the whole thing. How much I do, depends on what kind of mood I'm in (can I be bothered, do I think it will look good, that sorta thing).

My next step is creating a layer for colour, I set this layer to multiply. I do this so the sketchy lines of the pencil sketch are still slightly visable.
For this step I work in two different ways, depending on how I'm feeling. I either;
Block in all the basic colours, then go back and add in lighting and shadows
-OR-
Block in one specific colour, add shading/lighting to that section, move on to next colour.

Finally, for any specific details I don't want effected by the multiply layer, like say pure white for eye highlights or fog/mist, I do in their own specific layer(s).

I feel I should mention that because I paint in a multiply layer, the main colour I use to block in with is a different colour compared to what it originally is. To give an example, if I eyedrop RD's blue coat from a reference picture, it'll be slightly different shade then what it actually is. I adjust this when painting lights and darks - sometimes, heh.

Finally, I only use 3-4 ish layer usually. Original sketch, colour, highlights and lineart. Original sketch being the bottom layer, lineart being the top. I'm use to working traditionally, where the benefits of layers do not really exist. I also find myself painting in the wrong layer too often if I have multiple layers for different things. Finally, more layers add to computer system stress. That is why I only use a handful of layers.

I primarly use a mechanical pencil and basic, simple paper for sketching. GIMP and a Bamboo tablet for digital stuff.

*Phew*
I hope that long answer, answers your question! If there's anything else, feel free to ask!
