Description
In the first half of 2023, I was challenged to design a unique ZX Spectrum game based upon the Star Wars movie The Empire Strikes Back. The idea was to create something that showed more of the movie, more faithfully than either the old Atari arcade game or the more recent - but still retro - games for the 8-bit and 16-bit consoles from Sega and Nintendo.

This is my concept for phase 1 and 2 of Level 2, in which the forces of the Empire mouth their assault on the Rebels' base on Hoth. Phase 1 is against ground troops and AT-STs while defending Rebel gun emplacements. Phase 2 brings in the AT-ATs for their final attack on the base itself. This second part is essentially like a single wave of the Atari 2600 game by Parker Bros., but with ground troops and AT-STs, along with the option to use tow-cables to tangle up the AT-ATs' legs (having used one, you would have to return to base/supply caches to acquire another, but these can be destroyed) and wander round on foot if you get shot down (significantly less health, but you can one-shot the AT-ATs using the old grapple gun and grenade trick).
