Description
Hello all! I know I haven't submitted much recently - this is mainly due to working on this render, which was a surprise wedding anniversary present for my wife. If you do renders, you might consider making one of your better ones into a magnet, mousepad, or poster to commemorate special occasions or gifts for your loved ones. Sometimes, it is the time and effort and not the cash you spend that makes the present special. Sometimes they would much rather have a Porsche. I chose the former LOL!The story with this scene starts with Gelru Blackspear, a noble who has a penchant for monster hunting. He drags along his bodyguard, who of course does the heavy lifting. While he regails the gathered villagers of their wondrous adventure hunting down the hydra, Anortha Delbar takes care of the corpse, cleans their weapons and armor, and arranges food and lodging. On this adventure they had heard of a hydra in the burned lands that was becoming a problem, but was supposed to be an easy kill due to its blindness. As it turned out, the hydra was more than capable of functioning without its eyesight, using its fleshy tongues to smell the air around it and sense their heat signatures. On top of that, Blackspear's polearm was made for thrusting, and despite the acidic sheath on the blade and tines, did little more than annoy the monstrosity. Anortha's flame sword, however, easily cleaved head after head, whilst she deflected the worst of what the hydra threw at the two of them.
The scene was rendered in Daz and edited through Photo Affinity. I was also experimenting a bit with the balance of the scene and how busy and crowded the scene is. Practically all my scenes are centered, and I noticed most people don't leave dead space to the left, and when I got the shot with the camera, I decided wo work with space to the left.
Anortha, the woman in armor, has Runa's body type and wears SY's Morphing Fantasy Armor. Gelru is a mix of Bjarke and and Kjaer. The hydra is HH's Learnean Hydra - which just about every fantasy artist who does rendered has at least seen if they don't own it. It's a very nice creature. I got a little frustrated with the fact that it's not easy to just drop one of the heads on the ground for the decapitation effect due to the way they are set up, and I'm not fond of the dull scales, but that's really personal preference. All in all, HH's creatures, and the hydra in particular, are very detailed and versatile figures - if you use Daz and do fantasy renders, I suggest you pick this one up on sale at some point even though it is fairly old at this time.
The environment comes from the Burnt Lands HDRI - I just did a swamp scene and you always find hydras in swamps, so I was looking for a change.
