i don't know what the butt is going on with the colors but they are /not/ this saturated in my workspace...

I wanted an excuse to draw a dragon again so I joined Cynderheart 's redesign contest of her OC, Draico.  In the old ref, he's supposed to be a water dragon so I went for fish patterns and such.  I wanted to make more use of the purple on his paws.  He's a premature water dragon, so he doesn't look too... fish-y, yet.  I think I might draw what I imagine him to look like in his older years just to play around...

Feel free to ask questions about his design because I feel like I wasn't thorough enough with the clarification.  Also I love to talk about redesigns so huhu

*whispers* I absolutely adore your dragon style, it is so pleasant to look at <3

anyways

I am stunned with this design. I am in love with all the different markings, mainly because you managed to make them look very natural. But jeez, I really like that you gave him simple markings in areas where they wouldn't show too much. Every time I look at the design, I just find some that I didn't notice right away. My favourite is the top of the head marking and the little purple ones right between his wings ;w;
That light pink/purple looks so much better then that horrid colour I originally gave him xD

I really like the idea of him having webbed paws :'D I was never able to draw it correctly, but this looks good. And I especially like that you coloured them with that same pinkish colour c:
Another thing, those horns look beautiful! The colour is perfect.

Are the premature fins slightly transparent near the end? Or is that just lighting?

And wow, I'm really impressed with some of the ideas you gave him. For example, when I read the note on the sticky fingers, my jaw kind of dropped, because that is a great idea.
Now, I have to ask. Are his wings slightly folded in this reference? If so, what would the shape of them look like if they were outstretched?

Aww, thank you. <3

There is no real 'lighting' to speak of in this picture, so anything that looks like it's transparent (except his wings) is just colored with a gradient.  His 'premature fins' are supposed to be semi-hard like cartilage, but in my head they're too hard for any real transparency, yet.

His wings are folded in the main picture and not quite... stretched in the separate reference, either, so I guess I forgot to throw those in. :C  I can tell you that I imagined them to be quite large-- mostly lengthwise-- for gliding nicely over the water (and swimming through it when the time comes).  They're also supposed to be delicate, like the notes imply, since I also imagined them to eventually mature into more fin-like... things.  It might be way clearer in an age progression thing but I doubt that's coming out for a while, heh.  Most everything is designed with efficiency in mind; his belly plates, his wings, the 'sticky fingers'... the shape of his horns are all smoothed back and/or slick for either speed in the air or even greater speed in the water.

I appreciate your questions and compliments c:  I'm glad you like the design!
